has anyone used an m14 barrel mounted bi-pod ?or should i attatch a rail of some sort or have a smith put in the drain hole ? i don't want to get a harris and found a nc star that looks good.

Well, it definitely isn't the most stable one to get, but it works well enough. If you're interested, I got one for you for $20.
If you want to get the best stability, I'm afraid you'll have to lay down some $$$ for a Harris-Mount + Bipod.
