M14 Bayonet Lug vs. Gas Piston ?

I put a S.A. Flash Hider on my Norinco M14 shorty, now in order to remove the gas piston I neeed to remove the flash hider because there is not enough clearence between the two. Is there a flash hider that will thread directly on the existing barrel threads?...besides the original norinco hider.
 
Unscrew the gas plug and then shift the gas locking ring to the side and then the plug will be able to be removed .You dont have to remove the flash hider to remove the gas plug.
 
It will still come off that way.(I have the same rifle and flash hider).....unscrew the gas plug but dont try to remove it yet, move gas locking ring to the side and then remove the gas plug.

no... I had one, unscrew the gas plug (the cap) then do as the previous poster mentioned, un screw the gas locking ring (figure 8 looking piece) and position it 90 degrees to either side. It will give about another 1/4 inch of clearance and allow the piston to come out without having to remove the flash supressor and front sight.

Thanks chalkriver. I was just cleaning mine and ran into the same problem. You saved me from going the vice grips and hammer route!!!!:)
