I am looking at an M14 norinco and it has no date on the side so I am guessing it is a 2005? Am I probably right?? If so were they known for issues like the 2007's with teh headspacing and barrel indexing?? I know the 2007 and 2009 pretty well but not the pedigree of the 2005's help a brother out here!!!!

I've owned all kinds of Norinco M14's from 2002, 2003, 2005, 2009, and finally a 2007. They all are great with some smatterings of needed (read: tweaking the final indexing) re-indexing here and there. All the chambers measured from 10 thou to 17 thou.... about normal for the incoming Norc M14's, small for USGI M14 (read: TRW, SA, H&R, Win) sizes since they measured around 15 to 20 thou  NO Joking!

Dropping a USGI dimensioned bolt cured all those headspace dimensions down to ZERO ! :D Instantly! Many of you who have been to my clinic(s) have witnessed this demonstration! No lapping involved, just dropped the USGI bolt in and Voila! C'est tres magnifique! :)

That help your curiosity? Just ensure that yer #### don't fall off. ;)

Awesome, thanks for chiming in. I am looking at getting an M14 to have shortened with new muzzlebreak threads and install new break for me. I want this done by a pro but I have heard there is 1 or 2 places doing ####ty jobs. Can someone PM me to fill me in as to who to avoid??

i've owned several "older" than 2005 norincos with 7.62 nato match (1.635") headspace, no mods, all stock parts. one was a very early heel stamp version.
on the headspace note..... I am continually finding headspace meaurements on the new norinco and poly's sent to me are averaging 1.638" or nato go plus 3 thou :dancingbanana: ...... there gettin it right one batch at a time :D
now we need them to get a proper flash hider hider machinist cuz the one they got leans to the left or somethin hehehe
MUCH harder rear sight pinions and smaller lock collars........... and we are gravy ;)

The older Norinco's (2005 through 2007) are every bit as good, if not better, than the newest ones.

Most of the 2005 vintage ones has the date of assembly incorporated into the serial number. The first Marstar batch, brought in in about 2005, started in "00" meaning assembled in 2000. Not sure why so early, because they only got imported 5 years later???

If anything, after Marstar stopped importing these, the quality took a dip a little as more "new" parts seemed to get used on the same old receivers. Cast parts looked a little rougher, etc. I have a 2009 that when I got it the flash hider was so bad the chinese had weld repaired to mouth of it up by the cage! It looked AWFUL, they didn't even bother the dress the weld. Luckily I bought it as a donor barrelled receiver for a shorty ;)

just buy whichever you get a decent deal on and go from there. I find the norincos are marked less obnoxiously than the polys - though I have both.

THis has been the best post I have ever started. THe amount of useful information from all of you is top notch and you are all a credit to CZG. This is why I stick around here to here the pro's chime in, and the EE has some great deals once in a while.

TOm I will have to email you about getting a Norc shortened and new flash hider installed for me.

Thanks to all of you and my question has been more than thoroughly answered. You are all awesome!!!

Yes DrewZ, this is the best and friendliest forum on the CGNutz site :D We do our best to keep it that way. Everyone helps everyone and it becomes a win-win-win situation for everyone! :)

Hey we even have the milsurp dudes hanging around and asking M1 Garand questions! I don't bother moving them over... All great fun!

Dlask is doing most of them by mail order. The issue is it can be challenging for a non-Norinco experienced machinist to cut the barrel without damaging/flaking off the chrome lining out at the muzzle.
