I'm going deer hunting in a few days with my m14. I only have time to go to the local walmart and or canadian tire for ammo. Can anyone recommend ammo ( under 180 gr) from these stores?

Anyone ever use Selier and Bellot ammo in 150gr?

I took mine out last year with Win 150 soft points. It fed easily and grouped nice when I shot it in.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you how it performed on the deer as I didn't get one.

THanks for the replies guys. I was worreid about feeding reliablilty too. Gonna pick up some Win.powerpoints with my CT money. :D

Cheers!

Yup, the softer Federal primers will slamfire , especially if you DO NOT load it from the magazine.

Use your magazine to load the Federal rounds or ANY cartridges into your M14 / M1A chamber. If you are at a range , benchresting your rifle, I like to load the nose of the bullet almost on the edge of the chamber ready for the trip forward. Then Ill ensure the base of the cartridge under the right lip of the magazine. Then yank or slap that op rod handle rearwards and let the op rod fly forward. 8)

Enjoy the M14 "music". It's my favourite sound.

Hope this helps you avoid slamfires.

+1 I've used the same ammo on Black Bear from my M-14 with great results. And as soon as I find a Moose.....

Awesome suggestions guys. Thank you.

I didn't know about the slamfires with the Federal stuff. You guys probably saved me alot of grief.

My hunting time just got pushed into November today because of work. :(

Now I have lots of time to practice with the hunting ammo. :D

I've shot quite a bit of federal with no problems too, but will be more aware of the possibility after reading this thread. It's a shame as federal shoots well out of this rifle and that is what is mainly available locally.

Hello,

Just ordered a M 305 from Dark. What would be the best Winchester 308 ammo for deer, bear and moose hunting  ?

thanks

I used Federal Fusion 150gr stuff this year with excellent results on whitetail. Performs like a premium bullet for the same price as the generic stuff.

I used Hornady's 150 Grain SST in my M14, worked awesome on the doe I shot!!!

IMHO, slamfires are only a problem IF you put a round directly into the chamber and let the bolt "fly" or "slam" onto it. The energy required to strip a round from a loaded mag and chamber it prevents slamfires in the M14 with it's floating firing pin.

Cheers

I have used Winchester 150 gr. Fail Safes. They are a hollow point point so they feed well and thay seem to group very close to the military 147 gr. FN I usually shoot. So far they have been effective on every thing I have shot (calf moose, wolves, beavers with the proper permits from Enviorment Canada of course). Nice bullets just pricey.
