I wanted a front sight more compatible with my old eyes. A LARGE ring in the front sight allows me to see any kind of target and hit it. A small ring is only suitable for small black bullseye aiming marks. A large ring works on anything.

I make a lollipop front sight from a large target aperture.

First step is to grind off the front post. This exposes the cut in the top of the sight.

Then the lollipop is stuck in the exposed slot. I narrowed the slot with a piece of shim stock so that when the clamping screw is tightened, it also clamps the lollipop in place.

I will try this on the 14th at the last Vintage Rifle shoot of the season.

You shoot mostly bulls-eye with your M-14? I need to put my front post under the bottom of a 11/59, B-27, or B27R even at 200yds. I don't think I'd get very good groups with an aperture front on these type targets , do you and would I????

I have shot a lot of figure targets with post front sights. Three problems:

The elevation required for this setting will not match the elevation drum, because you want the bullet to strike quite high.

You have to be able to see the bottom edge of the target fairly clearly to line up the post.

The sight picture quality changes with light.

With a LARGE aperture it is easy. You just put what ever you want to hit in the front sight and pull the trigger. Fig 12s are the easiest, because the whole target fits in the sight, with room to spare. A Fig 11 has light on both sides but is cut off at head and knees.

Here is my 200 yard result on a fig 11 yesterday. I did not have an elevation before shooting this group.

That is a great group over irons at 200 Ganderite. I would say your aperture front method definitely works. It sounds almost as easy as the eye automatically centering and the rear aperture disappearing and not concentrated on. Thanks for reply.

Good groups and a cool mod!!! Looks like it would be fantastic for lower light situations where the front post would just disappear in the target.

But seriously.. All nut shots? Have a heart.
