just wonder what would affect if one would turn off the gas system for it to behave like a single shoot.
would it improve the accuracy, more velocity, less energy loose or would it f/u the whole thing? just asking

I suspect that the gas system will recriprocate the op rod, rotate the bolt, and load the next round a lot more consistently than you will ...
unless you practice a LOT!!

If you do decide to turn your semi auto into a bolt action by turning the gas off, make sure the op rod flies forward under full spring pressure, and that you are not riding the cocking handle and slowing the feeding down. Otherwise reliabile feeding and bullet deformation can become an issue

If a case sticks, you will have to resort to butt on the ground and stomping on the op-rod. There is very little leverage to open the bolt with the op rod.

Hitzy ... good point ... never thought of that, but you are absolutely 100% RIGHT ON!!
[My minds eye pictures a not so happy shooter jumping on his Op rod and saying special words ... ]

Rotating the bolt in a bolt action rifle, the spiral camming of the locking liugs exerts tremendous leverage and pressure to extract the case. Pulling straight back on an op rod in an M14, you have very little rotation and lots of hard pulling to do. Nowhere near as efficient.

Ha, ha I've done that a few times too many. It's a good thing, these M14s are pretty tough. I think the last time I had to do this, I hurt my foot

You can't just turn off the gas system on a stock M305/M1A like you can on an FAL. If you take out the gas piston, you'll still have gases coming into the gas tube. You'd have to put in one of the adjustable gas plugs.

There is a spindle valve for the gas system.

What Winz said ...
spindle slot/rollpin VERTICAL =Gas ON
Spindle slot HORIZONTAL= Gas OFF.
Originally designed for use with BLANK cartridges and GRENADE LAUNCHERS.

Of course, given that Gomer Pyle might/could/probably eventually would
try to launch his grenade with an actual live round of BALL ammo, such a great idea it was.
NOT!!!
