M14/M1A in the US

Hi. M14's are Class 3 firearms, Stateside. You have to live in a State that allows Class 3 ownership and follow U.S. Federal rules/regs(the $200 tax every time a Class 3 changes hands, for example). Some States require the local PD's permission too. Totally up to the Chief of Police/Sherrif despite what the State law may say.
Our bunch got the 'Once an MG, always an MG' nonsense from the ATF. Stateside, semi-auto'd M14 receivers are evil(they've been confiscated and chopped in the past), as are Chinese made M305's, Polytechs, et al. Clinton banned the importation of inexpensive Chinese made battle rifle copies years ago.
An M1A and its copies is a commercial sporting rifle, just like it is here. Suspect that they're getting difficult to find with King Obama's new plans though.

Considering the price of a Springfield, I'd imagine that they haven't produced more than 2-300 000 max, but that's simply a guess.
While Norinco's were banned from import into the US during the early 90s, I've heard that at one point Norinco was producing 30 000 guns a month for the US market, so maybe there's a few hundred thousand of those as well.
But for the price and notwithstanding the additional challenges of scoping them, I'd prefer owning an M1A over an AR if I had to choose between the two, as the M1a can double as an effective big game rifle, even if a bit heavy to carry. I pity the American who's still on the lookout for an M1A and hope that the current gun craze leads to a higher output and sale of those rifles to the public.

Just to be clear, I was speaking of M1A and Norinco M14S rifles, not the CA M14s.
