M14 /m305 calibre change ?

if dou don't see it already, a 270 is an -06 length, not 308- you can also go to 7mm08 or anyting on the 308 case, but you're in uncharted territory when it comes to gas volumes and reciprocating action- besides, the 308 is one of the m ost versatile cartridges - why f with it

The French and Belgians suffer under gun laws that restrict civilian ownership of certain military cartridges. They have a lot of 7-08 rifles.

As suggested, rebarrelling your M14/M305 might work with a quality replacement .243 bore. The place to look is in the US with their big custom barrel makers' shops.

If one had the desire, a different barrel could be done.

Buy a quality blank in whichever bore diameter you like. Spin it up on the lathe and contour it to fit. Thread for the gas lock. Muzzle threads are not required, but doable if you have the skill.

I believe the cost of doing the above would be prohibitive..... likely $1500 in machine time alone, and that's if you could find a machinist willing to do it!

You could order a custom barrel from one of the US boutique shops, probably run $1K by the time you settle the final bill.

Re-boreing the factory shot out or surplus bbl is possible. Smaller isn't doable, but larger is. Think .323, .338, .358 & .375, off a 308 case....

I know a guy who has a CNC mill and lathe. He does small jobs from time to time. Unless a fella had a run of 25 or more bbls to contour, it is price prohibitive, and even then, the cost outta the US is probably going to be cheaper.

The next thing to work out is the gas system. Easy IMHO. US gas system and a schuster gas plug.

I have a Springfield Armoury M1A with an original .243 Winchester springfield Barrel and although it is a standard weight barrel I have got .7 MOA at 200 yards in a JAE platform and hand loads. I am not 100% sure but Kreiger may offer barrels in .243, 7-08, etc.
