The problem with using the "normal" hunting ammo is not the bullet weight but rather the type of powder used. Hunting ammo is "usually" loaded with a powder that has a slower burn rate than military ammo. The longer burn rate equals higher velocity in "normal" hunting rifles. Providing you have enough barrel length to uitilize the slow burn.. The rub is that in the m-305 there is no way to adjust the gas pressure & volume that cycles the action. Slower burn rate equals a longer pressure curve. (You can buy an FN/FAL)

Soft commercial primers can also be a problem in some M305's. Some soft primers can cause slam fires in the M-14 type action.
There are only a couple of powders deamed OK for the M1 Garand, M-14 action.
Both my M1 and M-14 seem to like the Norinco .308 Win in the 520 rnd cases and 20 rnd boxes.

"...Can the M14/M305 fire normal .308 rounds..." Yep. I'd stay away from the Hornady Light Magnums though. Otherwise, any ammo that gives about 2800fps at 50,000psi will be fine.
Soft primers don't cause 'slam fires'. Poor loading techniques that leave high primers might. Mind you, in 30 some years, I've never seen nor heard of a slam fire.
