M14 magazine fix

I acquired an m14 and it came with 3 mags. I took it out to shoot and it shot great but my issues are with my mags.

2 of the mags I have I cant insert it on a closed bolt but on an open bolt no problem. The other mag no issues at all. I looked to compare the good mag with the other ones and I see that the rivet on the 2 mags are about a 1/4 inch higher than the one that has no issues. Which makes sense that I cant insert it on a closed bolt.

Now my question is am I legally able to put a new rivet on those 2 mags or do I have to take to a gunsmith or something?

Go for it. As long as it's limited to 5 rounds you're A-OK.

I have had to re-position rivets on pistol and AR mags numerous times.

That's good to hear! As for the existing rivet, once I drill it out what you recommend to fill it? Or is tape sufficient enough?

m14 mags need space for 5 1/2 rounds, as the bolt pushes down on the rounds when mag is inserted.

Could possibly leave the river in the existing hole and change the followers.

Might work for others, but all M14 followers are the same.

As for filling the hole from the old rivet, you're kinda SOL unless you know somebody good at welding that can fill and grind smooth.

Thanks for the feedback. Hmm would a dab of jb weld be good enough or could that mess it up
