M14 Mounts...Patented?

I finally spoke to my father regarding the M14 mounts on the market and what they sell for, and he was shocked that I paid $192 for the Arms 18 mount. My Father isn't up on firearms and the accessory costs, but after I told him what I bought, he agreed that he could probably make one in his basement. I mentioned in another thread that my Father is a retired machinist, but he does not like that term....he is a Tool n' Die maker. Apprenticed in Germany in the late 40's and eary 50's, he worked for Magna Eectronics most of his career making parts for the American Military and Spar Aerospace (CanadaArm Grapple fixtures).

So my question is...are the ARMS 18, Marstar Delux mounts and others patented in Canada? To my untrained eye, the mounts "look" the same, but they obviously differ in quality, as most of you prefer the ARMS mount.
 
"...a Tool n' Die maker..." That is most definitely not the same as a run of the mill machinist. Your da made the tooling machinists use. He can make reloading dies too. However, in order for there to be a patent, the item must be substantially different from anything previous. And patents run out.
Mostly, if your da has the equipment, nobody is going to arrest or sue him.

I am shocked as well...Wolverine charged me around $250 for mine by the time taxes and shipping were done.
 
put him to work makin gas lock front sights !!! these are in DEMAND for the chinese barrels.... ONLY current source - Marstar - sold out.... NO current source for dovetail version

and SCOUT MOUNTS .... this would be another big hit - NO CURRENT source.... rooster 33 stopped makin em

Are there any patent numbers on the actual scope mount itself? Isn't that typical for devices to bear the patent number? I thought these 3 point mounts were all derived from original military developments and evolution of the m14 mount over the years. There is possibly protection of the look of someone's mount under Industrial Design over and above something that can't be patented.
 
I really doubt that any of these mounts have had any substantial redesign in the past 17 years (the typical patent lifetime).

Follow 45ACPKing's advice and get the old fella crankin'-out the goodies! (make the reciever mount 1/4" longer in the back and 1.5" longer in the front)

I brought the ARMS 18 mount to my father this weelend and replication should not be a problem. Granted, my father is retired and setup of a C'nC machine is not factor. However, I would have to leave the mount with him for a while so he can properly duplicate it. :(

That being said, I know the gas locks are in demand and they are easier for a machinist to make, but I do not have one and don't think I need one. Would someone be interested in sending me one for measurements?
