every time i use it i feel like it is trying to cut off my finger. edges hurt. not just mine, but every one i have ever tried. seems as though they never even heard of the word "ergonomics" when the made it.

has anyone milled off the knife blade handle and had a knob installed like from a bolt gun?

Back in those days, ergonomics meant the fackin' thing worked all the time every time! Anything else was just a bonus.
I don't find it bad at all. Toughen up your hands or wear gloves.
Unless the edges have burrs and it's cutting your fingers (small file and stone to fix that).

You are a minority. The "ergonomics" were fine on six million plus Garands and one and a half million M 14's. I will say that one Norinco I have was not refined but a good workover with the sandblaster fixed that. Once reparked it was as good as USGI.

either you're holding it wrong or the 6 MILLION of us are wrong- I've had m14s since 79 ( I have 7 of them last time I looked) and for the life of me I can't find your so- called sharp surface- maybe someone on the wet coast can show you the proper way to hold the rifle-

Don't do it,please.

judging by the comments, it isnt only me that thinks it sucks. think i might milled if off and get a knob welded on.

One use for the op rod is a place to kick the action open on an improperly sized round or round failing to chamber properly in a dirty chamber after fighting zombies all night using your Chicom steel case ammo, not your Lapua match rounds(keeping aware of muzzle direction) . Kicking a round knob might not be so easy.
