I am sure the topic of optics choices for the m14/m1a has been beat into the ground so much, that you're sick of it. However I have a specific situation I am facing, and am wondering if someone could give me a little background/input based off their experiences.
I will just break it down neatly, so you can quickly go through it:
Rifle I own: Norc m14 18.5" with casm II mount. (On a side note, I already have a cz858 with Strikefire on it, for my close range shooting up to 150m).
Uses/intended use: I am going to be using this rifle for target and hunting, mainly target (hunting would be from a stationary position). The main point: I want to build it up/be able to use this as a mid-range "precision" (lol as precise as an m14 18.5" can be), Let's say a "sniper like" rifle (I hate using the word sniper, but you get what I mean).
Normal shooting distance: Honestly 100-300M. Max range: 400-500m maybe. (I don't think I will be going farther, as there are a lack of those ranges here). Hunting: 150m max.
Dilemma: I currently own a Bushnell Elite 6500 Tactical 4.5-30X50. It's already at my house, I just need rings. As I was looking at rings, I started getting worried it may be overkill. What I am considering is selling it and buying a Vortex PST 2.5-10X44 scope, OR maybe a Trijicon TR22 (2.5-10X56... huge glass, though, means high rings).
My question: Is the Bushnell overkill for my purposes? (I think so, but I like having a close up target) With my intended range, is the 2.5-10 even too much? I want to use this as my longer-range rifle (within the parameters of MY situation, so farther out than 200, but no more than the stated 300-400 - what *I* consider longer range within my shooting habits).
I was reading on a forum in the US, reviewing the EBR rifle, that Marine Sniper's are using a S&B 3.5-10X for targets up to 800m. Using that data, one would think that my 4.5-30 is WAY too much, and that the Trijicon or the Vortex would be more than enough?
