m14 Optic choice question: 2.5-10x vs. higher (4.5-30). Overkill?

I am sure the topic of optics choices for the m14/m1a has been beat into the ground so much, that you're sick of it. However I have a specific situation I am facing, and am wondering if someone could give me a little background/input based off their experiences.

I will just break it down neatly, so you can quickly go through it:

Rifle I own: Norc m14 18.5" with casm II mount. (On a side note, I already have a cz858 with Strikefire on it, for my close range shooting up to 150m).

Uses/intended use: I am going to be using this rifle for target and hunting, mainly target (hunting would be from a stationary position). The main point: I want to build it up/be able to use this as a mid-range "precision" (lol as precise as an m14 18.5" can be), Let's say a "sniper like" rifle (I hate using the word sniper, but you get what I mean).

Normal shooting distance: Honestly 100-300M. Max range: 400-500m maybe. (I don't think I will be going farther, as there are a lack of those ranges here). Hunting: 150m max.

Dilemma: I currently own a Bushnell Elite 6500 Tactical 4.5-30X50. It's already at my house, I just need rings. As I was looking at rings, I started getting worried it may be overkill. What I am considering is selling it and buying a Vortex PST 2.5-10X44 scope, OR maybe a Trijicon TR22 (2.5-10X56... huge glass, though, means high rings).

My question: Is the Bushnell overkill for my purposes? (I think so, but I like having a close up target) With my intended range, is the 2.5-10 even too much? I want to use this as my longer-range rifle (within the parameters of MY situation, so farther out than 200, but no more than the stated 300-400 - what *I* consider longer range within my shooting habits).

I was reading on a forum in the US, reviewing the EBR rifle, that Marine Sniper's are using a S&B 3.5-10X for targets up to 800m. Using that data, one would think that my 4.5-30 is WAY too much, and that the Trijicon or the Vortex would be more than enough?

Through an old mans (yes I'm a Fudd) eyes I have a 1.5-4.5 on mine right now and find it equal to using irons other I can dial it in for my eyes. For 500 m I would throw the glass on you have and put the money into a cheek riser.

On one hand, a really high-powered scope probably is overkill on an M305. OTOH, you _have_ the scope right now, and who knows what might pop up in the future. Unless the proceeds from selling the Bushnell will buy a decent scope PLUS some other useful toys, I'd hang on to it.

You can never have too much magnification. Just because your scope.can go to 30 power doesn't mean you have to use that all the time. If you already have one. you might s well use it. If you feel the 30 is too high, don't go that high then.

Wise words from all of you. I already HAVE the glass, and selling it will only equal in purchasing another scope, no extra toys... So I suppose that was an easy decision..

NOW... I need some rings. I still can't decide on the height, but I will go with either Weaver 6 hole, or Weaver rings. Mid or high, that is the question.

PS yomamma - VERY good point on the cheek riser... need to get one of those on the cheap, if one ever pops up on the EE!
