I love how my M14 is shooting for me with nothing done other than a strip down, clean, lube, and shoot so I have decided to clean up her appearance till I get into another stock later. Here is a pic of it before, looks decent in pics but in my hands I hated it. Well Krylon, elbow grease, and sandpaper to the rescue.

AFTER, waiting for paint to harden before reassembly and then completed pics will follow. I wanted my Tapco for my SKS in this color but no stock so this will tie me over for now.

Might be a bit too much tan so I may stripe it a bit with my airbrush but I am gonna let her sit and see if it grows on me or not. I really like it so far but do I mess with success???

Well maybe!!!

A very good job. Thanks a whole bunch for sharing. I painted my demo M14 stock with Krylon Camouflage paint in the same TAN that you've got. Nice choice!

All the best!

Hahahaha, the wife just walked in and saw the painted and assembled gun and got pissed and started to tie into me about buying a gun without telling her. Then she freaked when I couldn't stop laughing at her while she was mad. Well she is kissin ass now since I told her it is my old one that I painted and put back together. BTW she loves it too....hahahaha
Thanks for the compliments guys, I wish you had a clinic closer to me so I could tweak this girl up.

Don't wanna hijack your thread, but can you make it to Calgary for the 06 June clinic? We still got space! PM me later if you can make it to Calgary that weekend.

So how come you have not filled in the FA cut out areas with JB Weld (yet) ? Just wondering that's all. You see, that's half the fun of working in the USGI Glass stocks!

I put the scope and mount on today for fitment, I would like to get a lower mount since I have a bit too much clearance, it is a bushnell 4-16x50 large body with integrated sun shade and green lit mildot ret. I am in the process of tracking down a front upper handguard replacement with the leapers UTG rail mount system. I would then get a large eye relief scope, side mount tactical light and collapseable from verticl handgrip.
I have more work to do on the SKS too, just getting started on that baby too.

Its a standard USGI stock with a cheek rest. I am actually doing more mods to it so there will be a new post in a while about the stoc, mods, and paint. I really wanted to go with the Marstar chassis but for the price  and the amount of weight difference and weight distribution I am customizing mine.

I really wanted to go digital camo and it looks good on my SKS but the tan really grew on me. I am chopping and modding my stock right now as I am doing 3 different builds right now so when it is done I will open threads for them. Solid tan with the parkerized parts loks really nice. Get a satin or flat clear coat though for a final coat before assembly and handling.

Three comments:

1.] IF you could find some ferns locally [ here on the Wet Coast we use CEDAR fronds ] lay them on your stock and spray a couple of darker colors over the fronds. Remove fronds, cover with three coats of Matte clear Urethane varnish for durability/UV resistance.
WALLA - easy to do instant camoflage that actually looks good, WITHOUT using an air brush, no artistic skill required.

2.] I have an AKM stock that is awaiting an appointment with Mr. Chopsaw for a shave.
The AKM stocks are IMHO, the best handling of the munimula stocks, because they balance better for me, and seem to have less weight forward [ less muzzle heavy ] than most. The Chop Mod variants are even better ... and of course, for perfect balance, no one in his right mind would use anything but a SHORTY M14 in his custom stock, right??.

Unfortuinately, all those rails just cry out for more things to clamp on to the stock .... like a brick or the kitchen sink. Use willpower, KISS, and don't bolt on any of those "tactical wannabe" add ons until the actual Zombie invasion ... when that 10,000,000 candlepower light will actually do some good.

Just as a side note, my AKM stock with YHM tubular butt stock weighs only a few ounces morer than one of my GI Fiberglass stocks made into the LAZ side folder.
And that is before the date with Mr Chopsaw.

3.] The Rooster cheek rest on your stock should be parallel to the bore, or slope the other way. Otherwise recoil will wedge that cheek rest into your cheekbone.
OUCH!!
