Hi there,

I have noticed that my M14 piston is not striking the rod guide right in
the center. It is off center by about 1/16"

What can be done to correct this problem?

Thanks.

Most times this is because the op rod guide is loose on the barrel, and possibly misaligned. A few tuimes, this can be due to a really badly mis-indexed barrel to receiver fit. If your front sight also sits at a noticeable angle, this mis-indexing may be the cause.
Check the op rod guide first ... most of them are loose. Move the op rod guide on the barrel until it centers the piston to the face of the op rod. This is where it belongs. Without the op rod spring installed, check that the op rod moves traight and smooth in the groove in the receiver.

Remove the roll pin, beat the surface of the barrel witha small chisel or center punch to peen the surface [ roughen it up a bit ]. Add some red loctite, put the op rod guide back in place where it aligns properly, replace the pin, fine tune by hitting lightly with a rubber mallet, and let it sit overnight before firing.

Your M-14 will now be more accurate, more reliable, and will last longer, as the op rod will be straight with the groove in the receiver. So the op rod will be muich less likely to wear the important little tab that holds it on, and/or jump out of the groove,

And of course, your #### won't fall off.

Lazareus,

The roll pin that you refer to is the one that holds the support that the rod guide is sliding in? I see roll pin with 3 "dots" around it, the pin is about 2mm
in diameter. If I remove this pin, I'll be able to move the "hood" that supports
the guide?

Or are you talking about the pin that holds the rod itself?

The front sight looks like it is aligned properly.

he is talking about the part that is pinned to the barrel, between the gas system and the receiver, that the oprod slides through... the piece with the pin and the three dots ;)

Thanks guys.

One more question:
To remove this roll pin, do I punch it from left to right, right to left
or it does not matter?

It looks like you can punch it out from both sides.

I just dont want to damage it.
