M14 problems for a newbie :s

okay, very similar problem again. This time I checked the gas selector on the front o the rifle and it was set to the semi-auto position. It would fire, the hammer would reset, but the action didn't. I had to #### the action to cycle the next round. I haven't done anything different except for paint the stock and reassemble the rifle. I haven't had a chance to disassemble it since this problem, but I will tonight/soon and report if I find any errors caused by me.

Also, other than Live firing, is there any way to test if it's functioning correctly?

Thanks

Test for piston vacuum.
Lock back or remove oprod
Push piston in all the way and quickly remove finger. If piston falls slow, great, if piston drops like stone... Not good.
Also, how many rounds has it been since you cleaned out the carbon from your gas plug and piston? An accunulative build up inside these parts also leads to the problem you describe.

To add to te doc's com's...
Duke878 is your rifle a shorty?
Did you line up the gas hole on the barrel with the gas system hole?
