Hello all,

This could of been covered somewhere on the forums however i'll ask anyways cause i can't find any info. I am a relative new guy to the M14/305 world and am considering buying a Norinco M305 and having the barrel shortened, first question, how does one go about getting it shortened? and second question, when you do, does it change the classification of the rifle (non-res. to restricted??) i've seen SOCOM's on here for sale with the restriction classification and was wondering why that was the only thing i could see was cause of the shorter barrel? Can't wait to own this style of rifle regardless. it's truely a beautiful MBR, and seem addictive. Cheers!!!

It can be 18.5" or longer and still be non restricted.

To have the barrel shortened, it is unscrewed from the receiver using the appropriate tools, and a skilled machinist with a lathe cuts and crowns the barrel, and probably rethreads the cut end to take a threaded flash suppressor or muzzle brake.

thanks for the help! Now, i know there's no machinist/gunsmith where i am at. so any recommendations as to a person/company who can do this for me? Again thnaks for the info!

Actually it doesn't have to be removed from the receiver. Dlask in Vancouver can cut them but you are better of contacting M-14 Doctor (if you can wait until after June 15) and he will do it very reasonably and check everything for you at the same time.

The M14Doctor on this board can shorten your barrel but i think he's closed for business for another month or so. i believe another member here does it as well but not sure. Im sure someone will chime in.

thanks for the info!!! so the Norinco M305 are a fairly good entry level rifle? how is the preformance after the barrel is cut down generally? hahah i cant wait now i gotta have one the more i research on here the more i want!

Ironman6067: Welcome to the addiction. Feel free to read all those sticky(ies) and have fun tweaking the boomstick. While you are hanging in the FAQ Stickies, download my videos of the 2004 Abbotsford M14 Clinic and listen to my stale jokes. Hey, the price is right! Entry level rifle? All depends on your comfort level and who you yak with. :D It was one of my first centerfire rifles after leaving the Army where I carried an FNC1A1 7.62mm boomstick.....
