About two months ago I attended M14 Doctor’s clinic in Abbots ford. I have an M14 that has a Norinco receiver but everything else is USGI. At the clinic the rifle was gone over thoroughly and checked for headspace, indexing, gas function, muzzle wear, throat erosion- the works. I left it with Tom to do a trigger job. While he had it he also Tig welded it. I finally had the chance to take it to the range on the weekend. Our range is undergoing some improvements so that while we now have a covered firing line out to 200 metres we don’t have any shooting benches yet. I wanted to test it for, among other things, accuracy. I had to improvise and shoot from a prone position using my gun box to rest the rifle. Not the best position to test for accuracy but it was all I had. And I am not making excuses for my shooting either!!
I had some Nosler 168 gr. HPBT Match bullets. I put them over 41 grs.. of Varget in a Federal case with Federal Large Rifle Match primers.
I also had some of the same bullets sitting on top of IMR 8208 XBR (40 grs..)
My results with Varget were definitely best but the 8208 XBR wasn’t far behind. With a little tweaking I think the 8208 will shoot just as good or better. With the Varget I shot a five shot group at 100 meters with iron sights that measured 2.292 inches center to center.

I have an ARMS mount ready to put on and hope to shrink those groups a bit more once a scope is mounted although it would function quite well without one. I know where there is a big old black bear right now and I just might introduce him to this rifle.

I am really impressed with the trigger job. I know exactly when it is going to release and it is very smooth. I am also really happy knowing everything is tight and well within tolerances. I cannot recommend enough going to one of Tom’s clinics. He really knows his stuff and you come away knowing a lot more about your M14. Thanks, Tom.

Holy $h!t!!!
That was done with iron sight's @ 100 meter's!?!
You should be putting on clinic's on how to shoot with irons like that.

X2 on the clinics being worthwhile!!

Nice shooting rugerman!

I was at the same clinic and gave all my M14s a solid workout this last weekend! One of the rifles that had a recurring feed issue prior to the clinic put over 100rounds on target without a single problem! Very pleased.

Didn't we say that these $ 500ish M14's are more fun to tweak ? It gets even better when you tweak yer second ! That's in keeping with my advice of , "Don't buy ONE, buy TWO of them!"

Thanks for sharing with the pics and range report!

Nice work hawkeye! Very encouraging to the rest of us - to see what can be achieved with the irons alone. Well, by some of us anyway... ;)

Whats this? A fellow iron sight shooter prone in the dirt?!! I like this guy:D

Nice shooting;)

The other day I had my bone stock Norinco M14 out at the range. I'm not much of a rifle shooter, so I may have gotten lucky, but from a bench I shot one 3 shot group of right around an inch, and another at 200 yds that was about 1.75". This was with 110 gr VMAX bullets over 49.7 gr of BL-C(2). This was WAY better than some factory stuff I tried. I need to practice a bunch more to see if I can keep it consistent, but I have the target to prove it CAN be done. Can't wait to scope it!

i don't see WHAT you guys are jumping up and down about - the m14 is CAPABLE of all that and MORE with proper load development-

i see no reason why a guy can't get excited about results ;) to many of us it's just everyday run of the mill accuracy. for many of us who can tune our own guns.... i suppose we may not be easily impressed until we see dime size holes of 5 shots at 100 yards :D

but i think it's cool to see what the rifles are capable of and in Rugerman's case, a simple mod and a properly set up trigger increased the performance of his rifle. Now load development will show us what she can really do. This was not a "build" , this rifle has been assembled several years ago and until recently was a rack grade shooter, new she seems a step above "rack" grade and if a guy wants to "WooHoo" and share with the rest of us, I think that's just fine :)

Of course, in every crowd there will be naysayers (read: Yer #### WILL fall off  ) and that is part of life.

I'm backing up M14Doctor! Last October I was delivering an M14 Clinic to an Agency (which will remain unidentified) and their armorers. In the afternoon, after unitizing their gas cylinders and carrying out all the tweaks I teach in my clinics (and M14Doctor does on your boomsticks), the armorers were showing me their 'binders' full of old targets and newly shot targets of 5 round groups that were ALL cloverleaf'ed and could be covered by quarters and nickels  Damn, these guys are good with their (all of them) CHU Wood box stock Norc M14's. ALL of them were shooting iron sights. Not one of the armorers shot with optics. Ammo was 'company' match ammo. I will not say more. ;)

All I can say is; "Holy Feces!" I could not believe what I was witnessing. All the precision shooters will likely ask me to prove these claims, but sadly, I cannot reveal any more information. These fellas can shoot! Their Norc M14's can really shoot ! :D

For all the naysayers, "I've been there, seen their groups", and I'm super impressed! Thankfully, nobody's #### fell off ! :)

Hopefully this will back some claims of fantastic accuracy potential of these $ 400ish boomsticks. Not all of them will shoot like what I saw at this LE Agency's structure, but they sure inspired me! ;)
