What reduced powder weights are folks using for their M14's in CQB matches? I'm looking at 4895 and 4064 powders with 150 grain bullets. I could experiment for the weight that will still cycle the action but I hate reinventing wheels.
Thanks

Ganderite should be chiming in any time soon. He has had success in the past with reduced .308 Win loads!

I just like my 125 gr Speer TNT booolits! Lots of noise, no recoil!

Cheers,
Barney

For 50 to 5 yards of CQB I load mine with 110 grain FMJs from Hornady loaded with 39 grs of 4895. It's low recoil and the projectiles are fairly inexpensive. I tried the plated 110 projectiles from Frontier but it was not that accurate past 50.

OP, while it's not an M14, I have loaded my Garand down significantly from full power M2 ball specs and never managed to find the lower limit where it wouldn't function properly. For example, my standard 150gr bullet load is 48.0gr of IMR-4064, which is somewhat softer than M2 specs. I have gone as low as 41gr and the thing still functions 100% at that point. Recoil was far less than mild with that load.

To find the lower limit, just load 10 rounds with decreasing powder charges. For this test I would drop a grain for each one. Start maybe 5gr less than your standard loads and go down from there. It would take one range trip and 10 rounds to find a lower limit, not really that much and the only way to know what works in your rifle.

I have not found the lower limit in my Norc M14.

I load old surplus pulled 147gr bullets, or pulled 147gr. tracers. The powder I use is pulled surplus powder similar to BLC2.

Instead of 44gr I load 25 gr. It still functions 100% and accuracy is good at 50 yards. In the first test i loaded ammo down in 1 gr increments all the way to 25. I never thought it would function all the way to 25, but it did. Recoil is like a BB gun...

BTW, for 7.62x39 I pull the bullets and drop the powder charge by by 7 gr.

For 223, i drop powder charge by 5gr.
