The part about penetration is always sort of glanced over. But if you think about it, the NVA and VC used 7.62x39 which is known to penetrate wood, while the 55gr 5.56 out of a 1:12 fragments if it strikes a twig. So that's really quite a disadvantage when they talk about how they often had to just shoot at areas and couldn't see the enemy.
