I get my m14 back from the Dr. this week and am considering putting new optics on it. I would like to do some 300+ yards shots, both hunting and at targets. The three scopes I'm considering are:

Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9 x 40 (probably buy one on the EE)
Falcon 4-14x44 MOA ($420 at Frontier)
Vortex Viper 3.5-10x50 ($459 on the EE)

I'm looking for advice from my fellow M14 enthusiasts here, that's why I posted this here and not in the optics category. What do you guys think? Which is best for an m14? Also, I am interested to hear other recommendations in the same price range. People who recommend Leupold Mark 4 Tacticals should be prepared to chip in the extra $1500 :)

Thanks.

I had the Falcon you mentioned and thought it was good out to 300 but found that I wanted more power out that far. 14 power would be the lowest I would go. I myself would prefer the Falcon 5.5-25FFP if I were to do it again.

i used to run a 6 - 18 x 50 and loved it to 400 yards, also loved the infinite parralax adjustment.
can't think of the brand at the moment.... it's been long gone now...

Bushnell is a hit or miss on there quailty
Falcon is nice but the glass is alright
Vortex Viper has no questions asked warrenty, surived the tundra test & dosn't require parallax adjustment.
If it was my choice between the 3 and since I owned all three. I would go for a Vortex any day of the week. Exspecaily once you try the turret system witch is excatly like the Ziess Conquest. As a matter of fact my name is on there waiting list for there newest release. The Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope;)

Hmmmm it sounds like I really should go with the Vortex. I'm just a little nervous going with a new company. It's easy to offer a warranty if you're not going to be around in a few years.

Satain, how does the glass compare on the vortex? A guy at wholesale sports told me that it is the same glass as Nikon, however I haven't heard this anywhere else, and I can't find a link between the two companies online.

Everyone !

Every one recommends what they bought -

A quality scope is determined by the cost -
Look at the price tags -

Good stuff is very expensive -

The rest have the same price tag -

mediocre is still mediocre - A good scope lasts more than a lifetime -

I like the Bushnell Elite series and have quite a number of them ( note, I say the Elite series - I have no time for the lesser ones ) and a scope that I have found to perform well on the M1A is the Elite 3200 10x40. Fixed power means less to go wrong and 10x should be fine out to 300.

I have very old elites - just as good now as when they were new - I have high priced scopes from the 50's as good - same same -
Leuopold etc. is better tho -

This is exactly correct. There are no quality optics for low prices. Try to get one on sale but there is no magic with optics pricing.

If I would have to compare the glass I would compare it to Leupold Mark serris or a Ziess Conquest serris. The Bushnell was alright but at low light conditions it sucked. As for the Falcon glass it is alright like I said. Sort of like the Leupold Eilte line or a Mark III. As for reliabilty well lets just say a little less than 300 rounds with the bushnell then it went the way of over 6 months in the repair lab just to have them send me a new 1 after I spent $400 on so called repairs to it. The Falcon lost it's zero after a trek up to my cabin and I am thank-full that my mount allowed me to still use it's iron sight's. As for my Vortex...
1,000 plus rounds & love shooting it in low light but the BDC and Duplex reticales leave something to desire. Although if a Mark 4 is in your budjet I would agree with Oldsmobiler & get it as this optic as the reticale for it is nice. Also if you live near Italian Sporting Goods they have all of the following optic's on display and truely allows you to put the comparison side by side all the major scope company's.
