M14 Stamped .308

Hi guys i noticed my polytech M14 was stamped .308 and not 7.62 X51, does that mean its safer to shoot regular .308 ammo instead of 7.62X51 nato? thanks

NO.

Pressure limits of the two are the same. But milpec ammo has the correct port pressure to prevent battering the op rod. Commercial 308 with heavy bullets would use slower powder which would result in a higher port pressure.

Unless rifle has an adjustable gas system.

Not adjustable per se, but you could shut off the gas port and use as a bolt action, although this really defeats the purpose.
