Whats your opinion (before I drop $200) ?

+1 It works well on my Norc. Ordered direct from SEI and they shipped it direct for $100 plus shipping. Why pay Brownells $130?

Nice!

Is that an UltiMAK M8 rail?

Heheh. You know your M14 accessories! It sure is. I needed a solution to mount the EOTECH forward, as well as leave an option for a scout scope later. I shot this rifle as shown at the OSA fun match last month. All of the shooting was under time pressure at 200m prone. The EOTECH makes it very easy to hit targets (including moving ones) at that range and the Smith brake makes my followup shots very quick. Best part is that both my eyes remain open all the time.

I don't intend to hijack the thread, but I would like to know more
about the UltiMAK M8 rail - especially how it installs on the barrel.
It looks like it would be ideal on my Crazy Horse LITE SDM with an EOTech.

Pictures? Reviews? Range reports?

***Installation and great pics - this shows you exactly what you want to know:

One note from my experience. I installed on a stock Norc with the standard barrel. When I first started installing, I was dismayed as it appeared that the "barrel bands" seemed too small to easily fit over my barrel. But after cranking the hex heads down nice and tight, everything fit and the rifle was reassembled with no intereference with the action.

After a couple of hundred rounds down range, there has not been any movement. I highly recommend the Ultimak.

Thank you for the URLs.

Do you notice any barrel heat transfer issues?
Does the rail get hot and will it effect an EOTech?

Can you co-witness the irons through the EOTech?

Thanks again :)

I shot a lot in a short time at Milcun last month. No heat issues. Very little transfer; no heat shimmer. The EOTECH worked great, especially with moving targets.

Despite the Ultimak being the lowest mount available, the EOTECH is far too high by itself to co-witness. I use an Eagle strap-on butt cheek rest to get my cheek weld high enough. There may be other electronic sights that will co-witness. Go to the Ultimak website, as they talk a fair bit about this stuff. Good luck!

You helped me make a decision - thank you.

Since co-witness is not available with the EOTech and I plan to run an
EOTech with a .308 BDC reticle I have decided to stay with the KAC RAS.

:D

Got all my GI original fiberglass stocks from Fred's in the US. But he won't ship to Canada anymore. Your best bet is to get a stock on Gunnutz Equipment Exchange. Keep you eyes peeled for one.

Boyd's stocks in the US also has some wooden stocks for the M1A. Check those out though you may run up against the $100 order limit (without a special permit, that is).

There are other very expensive aluminum options, but you'll be spending at least $800. Marstar.ca has one such. Other's are available through some of the board's retailers. Lot's of info here on the Battle Rifle forum, especially the stickie's.

Good luck and congrats on your new rifle! I love mine.

Thanks for the advice - for some reason I thought Smith wouldn't sell direct anymore but I just recieved an Email back from them that my order will be processed after the next production run
:dancingbanana:

My interest stemed from seeing this product at the Calgary gunshow last weekend. For those of you who can't wait for SEI to build you one, they are available from "He Who Can't Be Named" for $200.

I'm about to take an order for this Muzzle Brake as well. But just wondering if you install this yourself? How do you get the old suppressor out? I can't find any tool to remove the suppressor's round nut set screw. Also did you buy the castle nut pliers to remove the nut?

The hardest part was taking off the Norc flash hider. Mine were welded on and were a real ##### to get off. Used a combination of drilling the welds and plenty of hammer blows. Good luck, you might need it!

IIRC, the set screw is a standard metric size allen key. Can someone else confirm?

And yes, as I have 3 Norc M-305's, I invested in Castle Nut pliers and various other M1A specific tools from Brownells.

I tried all my allen key, none of them worked either too small or too big. But anyway, gonna try it again. thanks

An update FYI
I received the brake from Smiths last week. Package came through labeled as "machined parts" with no problems.
My Nork FH came off with absolutley no trouble at all - backed off setscew on front pin and tapped it off with a brass punch.
Backed off castle nut set screw and used brass punch to loosen castle nut (I don't have a castle nut wrench), and gave the FH a couple of whacks with a a hammer and a piece of hardwood and off she came.
The "Coast Gaurd Brake" fit in place very nicely.
Only had a chance to fire a few rounds with it this aft., but it does seem to reduce muzzle lift noticably.
