I tried the same thing, sort of.
I had cut an oak tree down and into 16" lengths. Stuck a target on the end of one round set on top of a standing log.
After firing a few rounds I went to look and the rounds were passing all the way through the log. No difference with the grain or across it.
Put a few concrete blocks behind the log they caught the FMJ rounds inside the center cavity.

im not.. his target is big enough.. same size, if not larger than a 40gal drum .. which we regularly shoot up at my local range at that distance
i use a norc with SA surplus
Speaking from experience with FMJ...
7.62x51 will pass right through a car and usually tumble to 90 degrees upon exit from the other side; 7.62x39 will pass right through a car and usually tumble to 45-90 degrees upon exit from the other sideand; 5.56x45 will usually pass through both side of the car but will definitely penetrate first door and cause a bad day for anything inside the cabin.
