M14 vs M4?

I'm considering selling my HK and would like to pick up a rifle to replace it, I'm considering the M4 as it's a lower cal and cheaper to run (my kids could handle it easier), but I'm also partial to the M14 as it's 7.62 and that's what I'm used to (but it's a beast on the lads).
The kicker, I have about 500 rds of surplus 7.62 that I could put towards the M14, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up spending extra on the M14 to "update" it with rails etc.

Unfortunately I don't think I can afford anything too high end (I'd like a Swiss Arms or XCR), but would love a SCAR-H (which we probably won't be able to source up here anyway).

Any comments would be appreciated!

A tuned Norc M14 can be found on EE for around $600. As for the AR...again go for the Norc. I was a bit skeptical about the Norinco AR but they are actually pretty great, check it out......http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=515231&highlight=Norinco

All said an done with a bit of stuff added to the AR you should be well under $2000 hope that helps.

well, if you dont want the m14, i'll take that surplus off your hands. WIth a little bit of time and money you can turn it into a real shooter. Tho, mine was a great shooter out of the box, I mooded it to my liking, not to get it shootin' beter

Sell the 7.62 ammo on the EE (it will be snatched within an hour), and invest in a Swiss Arms.

The kick of the m14 can be reduced with a good brake. I love my smith enterprises brake on my m14, but even with reloading it is expensive to shoot. The m4 is far more economical to shoot, and if your kids are into video games they may relate to the m4 more than the m14.

I know I first really started to like the m4 when playing Counter Strike Beta, even if it was animated with the forward assist being used as the charging handle.
