M14 with 18.5" barrel

I am planning shorting M305 barrel to 18.5".

Somebody here must have done that.

Anyone have a picture?

Also, do I have to do anything on the gas system?

Loads and loads of CGNutters have chopped their M14 barrels down. Some of them should be chiming in soon.

Nope you don't have to do anything to the gas system whatsoever after you shorten the barrel. Just shoot the rifle lots and have fun. :D

Go right ahead and do it, no other mods are required.
Depending on the way you do it you might want to buy a Gas lock Front Sight from Marstar or somewhere (see below)

There are two basic methods:

One: A) Get a chop saw or cutting disk, wheel etc
B) Mark 18.75" on the barrel
C) Cut the barrel

While no the most athestically pleasing and while it doesn't allow for any attachment (or a front sight) this is the fastest method and by far the cheapest.

Two: A) Strip rfile apart
B) Wrap it up and send it to a gunsmith and tell him to cut the barrel to 18.50" and thread it for whatever attacment you deem neccessary.
C) HAve the gunsmith send it back to you after yo have paid him.


That's about it.

Haven't had any problems yet. I does affect the accuracy but we haven't done any testing yet to see, and honestly we didn't rreally group it before we cut it either:redface:
 
I just got an m14 and was wondering if chopping the barrle to 18.5 inches causes any changes in accuracy? Also would it change the effective shooting range of the rifle? Also, what are the benefits of chopping the barrel?

And the last one, is it possible to get an aftermarket 18.5 inch barrel that would improve accuracy and/or range?

I shot my m14 for the first time today, and im hooked, im going to try and get my hands on another one!

It can if you don't have the barrel recrowned. My one shorty was done by valley gunsmithing and it shoots just as well as before.

Well you loose velocity with a shorter barrel so yes you do, but it depends on what kind of range you're talking about 100-200 yards no problem for sure, I don't have the data for further out you'd have to get some numbers figured out. With a muzzle velocity and some ballistics tables you could get a pretty good idea of what's going on.

YEp buy a krieger barrel for $600+ and get it cut down

Be aware that if you cut the barrel to less that 18.5" it will become a restricted firearm.
Any gunsmith that does this kind of work should know this, but be sure to ask about it.

How about I chop the barrel and thread it, then put the original sight and flash hider back on?

Not a big fan of Gas lock Front Sight.
 
You'll need to cut splines on the barrel to index the flash supressor assembly, how you'll do that ? Unless you have a mill or something.
 
toya is right. The original configuration of the factory splines are a PITA to carry out. Keep it simple and have a Smith Vortex or something similar threaded on and your are back in the the "cool factor". :D
 
Actually there is another thread where somebody just reamed out and cut threads on the inside of the original flash surpressor with a washer to index it, don't remember who though. No messy splines required!

Not with the original barrel you will need to replace the barrel as there is very little material to machine in the indexing splines on the shortened stock barrel .OK like no material .
If you are set on using the Stock front sight assembly you will have to with a aftermarket unit that is 18.5 inches this will allow you to use the standard front sight .Be also aware that the Chamber on the new barrel needs to have the finishing reamer run thru it as the barrels chambers are 10 tho + shorter than required

Basically, you can do this WITHOUT SPLINES. The original flash suppressor is re-used (assuming you don't mangle it too much breaking the welds). The spline channels are reamed out and the inside of the supressor threaded, with a washer to control indexing. Not a do-it-yourself project unless you are a machinist, but do-able none the less.
