M14 wood stock usgi grade 1,2,3

I think the only issue i heard with swapping the chinese m14 into the usgi stock is the connector lock pin is shorter than a usgi one due to it being only semi auto. So it might cause it to free float and come loose and out comes the op rod guide in a usgi stock. Ways of fixing it was either get a usgi connector and pin or take a piece of popsicle stick and glue it to the wooden stock

I'll go for the usgi connector pin first :)

I don think I'll run into issues since I'm planing on getting a bare m305 receiver, and all other parts will be USGI/actual M14/M1A.

The M305 receivers CAN be drilled out to accept the larger diameter USGI pin. Use a very high quality and BRAND NEW TiNi coated HSS drill, or if you do more than one, buy a cobalt drill. Or reduce the diameter of the GI pin - it's hard, so you'd better have a lathe and carbide tooling. Or make a new GI-length pin out of whatever, but don't make it too soft or the connector will beat the crap out of the pin.

I usually just alter the receiver lately, but I used to machine the pins down. Both methods work, but drilling the receiver is a "better" fix as future parts swapping is easier.

FWIW, the longer pin is not needed for full auto. The recess cut for the disconnector to reciprocate in keeps the front end of the disconnector from touching the pin unless the stock is worn, and also, the op rod recess shape keeps the disconnector from dropping down on the pin with the bolt closed and the action removed. Full auto will still work with a short pin if all the other parts are in place. The Americans, I think, went to a long pin because it was easier than milling a step into the stock below the disconnector bar.

I hate the popsicle stick mod. It's amateur hour if you are spending big on other parts of the rifle anyway.

I missed he Grade 1 stocks, sadly, so I have a Grade 2 en route. Hopefully it's not a dog.

If it's not better than the other walnut stock I have here, then it will become a spare. But either way, I already have a spare set of GI metal here - so that's a bonus. Hopefully they have the nosecap still installed. It's very tough to remove a nose cap without destroying either the cap or the stock, as they are heavily pressed into the wood. I don't have a spare nosecap right now, but at least Treeline has them.

SIMON: Are the nose caps still present on these? Hard to tell in pics.

I took the pin out and had a machine shop make me longer ones.
The receiver stays the same and the pins work great

Which pin are we talking about?

I'm gathering it is the one that retains the op rod spring guide to the receiver?

Got a grade 1 the first i saw the ad. Glad I got in early, figured they wouldn't last long, beats ordering a US stock.
Only thing I really need now is a good receiver, LRB hopefully.

I have an LRB - I would not buy another. I'm thoroughly unimpressed with what you get for the price, and mine ended up with little issues I had to fix to make it run right.

If doing again, I would get a BULA or look for a nice chinese one, de-burr and get the heel engraved. Better end result.

Sorry to the LRB fans - as I said I DO in fact have one, it works, but required a lot of work to get to that point and I would never buy another.

Something like this?

I thought LRB was supposed to be hot #### for receivers, you'd think at their price point they'd have their stuff figured out.

Yeah, well, to be honest, I think the internal geometry is better in Fulton, Sai or Bula receivers than LRB. They take shortcuts in machining the heel interior that causes bolt fitting issues at the back of the receiver. The bridges are a smidge too high sometimes, the front receiver ring is a few thou too narrow, sometimes affecting timing. And on one receiver, it turned out the receiver had rust pits that were filled with epoxy and some kind of black park-like finish was applied. When I sent the receiver for re-park to match the barrel, the sandblasting revealed all these pitting defects. It was a new out of the box receiver too.

Never again.

Simon - can we pls have a straight answer - are the crimped-on metal nose caps still present on these stocks?

I've asked a couple places above, but no answer yet.

No idea at the moment we have 3 events from now till Monday and all but 1 person in shipping arw out of the office.
Stocks are in the wearhouse.

ok, thanks. Pls advise when you can - it makes a difference on whether I need to order that part, I have everything else to build out a few stocks, but not spare nose caps.
