Hey guys,

So I recently picked up a NORChester 1897 Trench gun and a buddy and I brought it out to the range the other day, and of course we had to try the famed slam fire...which was a lot of fun.

However it got me thinking what prevents these guns from getting an out of battery detonation with the trigger depressed?

If any 1897 gurus could answer my question that would be great!

With rearward pressure on the forend, dry fire the gun. You will notice that the slide will not move rearward until it bumps forward slightly. This forward bump is provided by the recoil even when you have rearward pressure exerted on the forend. Recoil does not occur until the shot column or slug clears the muzzle, therefore there is no danger of taking the gun out of battery while the barrel is pressured up.
