M1A Cheekpads??

M14 cheek pad

I tried the foam lace on cheek pads on my rifle and could not get a consistent cheek weld. I eventually made one out of a piece of blue plastic food barrel ($15 locally). This stuff is thermoplastic, it bends under heat and takes a new shape and cools in that shape. I formed the cheek piece to fit over the stock comb and contact cemented a piece of high density foam into the cheek piece for the right height. I then attached some self adhesive hook and loop strips to the stock comb and the foam insert. Loops on rifle and hooks on cheek piece, to keep the cheek piece from shifting position. To ensure that it stays on the rifle I drilled some holes in the new cheek piece and laced it on although that may not be necessary. To remove it I have to spread the cheek piece and pull the velcro off from one side (that sounds bad doesn't it). A quick shot of the same krylon paint as the stock and it matchs great. This gives me a solid cheek piece with a good cheek weld that is removable for use with the irons and doesn't permanently modify the stock at all.

i just got a couple of pieces of hot water pipe insluation and cut it to size- had to put one on top of the other to get enough height- then screwed the works to the stock-

I've tried that actual pad on my SM M1a. It was definatley better then the smith enterprises one. but it still moves around. I found that when you actually got the bag tightened all the way down so it wouldn't move it was too low, so then I put foam under it and it just got too unstable. I ended up taking the stock to my Dad who is a wood worker and he built me a custom wood pad that fits the contour of my stock. Then I drilled in female bolt receivers (like a drywall screw backer but made of steel) and then attached it to those with allan flat head bolts. send me a PM and I'll send you a few pictures. I just picked up a JAE-100 Gen 2 Stock and I'm willing to part with my McMillan Stock with this mod if you are interested in working something out. This is a pain in the ass coming up with a solution that works and is reliable.

cheers,

I made one out of left over kydex from my brother and stuck on with industrial strength velcro (wanted the option of ripping it out if I have to take out the scope for iron sights).
