So I just picked up a Springfield M1A National Match in a trade. Everything looks good other then the windage knob split screw is pretty much done, meaning there's not really anything to grab on to.Somebody got a little rammy with a screw driver or something. Anybody had this happen and if so whats the best way to go about removing. I would definitely like to avoid drilling it out as I will destroy the elevation knob. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does it work the way it should ? or not working, if not you need to replace part.. and ..to do that you need to get it apart..

Question.. how tight is the elevation Knob and Windage knob .... Can you move both ?

do a search on how to remove/ take apart M14 / M1 garand Rear sight

You could try to loosen the screw on the elevaton knob, it might release some tension so you can turn the windage nut

The elevation knob is pooched as well and doesn't elevate the rear sight so maybe I'll have to replace that too. I'll definitely try backing it off the see if I can release so tension on the windage knob. As far as taking it apart, that's pretty straight forward. I just need to be able to get on to whats left of the split screw which isn't much. Maybe an easy out?

I could be wrong .... NM Sights ... I think the windage threads inside the sight are finer threads than the normal .... the tension nut should be the same ....

I only have 1 NM Sight and its too much of a pain to pull it apart to look at it side by side to a reg sight .... so you need to look for M14/m1a/M1 Garand sights or sight parts or USGI sights or sight parts

the norinco ones have a different thread pitch

The original NM sights used a fine thread (64 TPI) windage knob and matching base, but the elevation pinion is the same. The supply of original NM sights dwindled and Springfield started using standard coarse thread (32 TPI) parts and performed a modification to the receiver to provide the same 1/2 MOA windage adjustment.

Depending on the age the rifle it may have either set up. Reproduction NM sight bases and fine thread windage knobs are available through sellers like EBay if those parts are damaged on your rifle.

What many others have said, and I'll add...That split screw inside the windage knob, has a ball detent installed in it before it is inserted into the knob, the detent positions are 180 degrees apart IIRC. They are not really meant to come apart, at least not at the level of repair we are all used to performing. Another windage knob is the answer, but not a chinese manufactured one, all of those I've run across don't function correctly.

Skidrowe:

Checked and I have a spare NM2A base and matching fine thread NM windage knob, both with 64TPI and will work on original SAI rifles and the newer models with the ball bearing/spring receiver modification.

It has a non hooded NM aperture, I think it came from a M1A Loaded model. If your parts are pooched PM me if you need a replacement NM sight base/windage knob.
