Is there a kit to convert a regular M1A or M14s to a SA Scout Squad version in 18.5''? Any info/specs on this subject would be appreciated. I know they use a USGI Coast Guard style flash suppressor.

Jeff at Valley Gun does the conversion:

He's been waiting on Rooster parts from what I've read on the forum.

Jeff contacted me this week, as he has one of my M-305's, and he confirmed that they received Rooster's parts on Monday. Yeah!!

So, he has a bunch of parts in, though I can't confirm how many extra's he has, i.e. for new jobs.

Contact him and find out.

Good to know that Rooster parts are in..I know that Valley does the Socom version but I've never heard of them of doing a Scout Squad version yet.

All you would need is a new barrel (18.5 inch criterion), a springfield armory scout scope mount and a scout handguard. Wolverine supplies should be able to get the mount and handguard no problems. The barrel would be a little more difficult as it requires import/export paperwork. The reason I think you'd be better off with the new barrel rather than a chop job is that a USGI flash hider (and the coast guard one) requires some indexed slots to be cut in addition to the regular crowning/threading associated with a barrel parting job. A newly manufactured 18.5 inch barrel would have these slots already cut, and you can be guarenteed they are cut appropriately. I'd be looking for a US source for the barrel and get questar to handle the import/export paperwork for you.

Good luck....

Jeff sure does some nice work...Any range report on those mod M14?
I am still considering getting the real deal (SA M1A Scout) instead of modifying my Norc...The Krieger Criterion barrel, E2 brake, Forehand mount & gunsmithing will end up close to $1000.00 or more + time to arrive & US paper work BS.. And at the end it is stilll a Norinco.
