Just picked up a Springfield M1A. Not the National Match but it has a heavy stainless steel barrel, NM sight (but not eyepiece) and the NM muzzle break. Not glass bedded.

The stock is walnut and is made by Boyds. Beautiful piece of wood.

So far I have taken the gun apart, started to finish the stock (Tung oil) and have ordered some odds and ends from Brownells.

I have a quantity of IVI ball that I plan to use to break the gun in.

My plan is to handload.

I haven't owned an MIA for 15 years so I am starting back in. Any advice?

My advice is please teach me and join me at the range. I belong to chas and Phoenix. I have a SA m1a Super, so it's bedded. Would like to compare notes. I don't reload. You can have my once used primo brass. And I've got about 40 rounds through it.
Welcome to Cgn!

Read "Reloading for the M14" by Zediker. Google it, you can find it very easily. If your a hands on type of guy, consider bedding the stock. You also might want o get your gas cylinder unitized to help with accuracy. But above all, shoot it.

Yup. Go to the store, buy ammo, go to the range! You're done!

I just love mine. I have been dreading putting a scope on it but old failing eyes demand it. I shot the beast off the bags for the first time in gale force winds on the crappiest of days at the range - and STILL got 2" groups out of it! When I shot it off my hind feet I did about as well as I did with a precision varmint gun I used to be in love with. All I needed was a shooting mitt, a cool jacket with the padded elbows - and I would have fit right in on the line at Camp Perry!

I am at the Sherwood Park range and can help you with the reloading thing - basically the boys are right about reading up on it first. The M14 is NOT a bolt gun and is very particular about reloads. It isn't rocket science or voodoo but it is different than reloading for conventional guns. In exchange If you could teach me how to shoot I would consider myself ahead in the bargain....

Well, if you haven't checked out my youtube page, please do.

I've been toying around with doing a reloading video but am still undecided. I'll give you a nice short range accurate load though: Commercial cases, 45 grains if IMR-4064, Standard LR primer (CCI-200, Rem 9&1/2) Speer 125gr TNT loaded to 2.700" trim brass to 2.005". It's a laser beam out to 200yds. Works really well with 1:12" barrels.

Tony.

M1a Al, Hahaha Les outed you the other day.

Now you've done it, we're expecting you to go shoot that thing for real.

I've had Hagar the Horrible messing with mine for the last 2 years...so I can't add anything constructive other than 168gr Sierra is your friend.

All the best d

I have a couple thousand 147 gr FMJ bullets, three thousand 150 gr Speer SP and enough brass powder and primers to load the lot.

168 gr match are a ways down the line.
