I'm sure it has been asked but is there anywhere to get surplus m2 ball for garands? I'd love the ammo but I'd also like to have some cases/tins.

Thanks

You and many more shooter's! Decade's ago there was some floating around, but now your best bet is to reload

Dang ok I figured as much!

I have a couple hundred rounds of garand ammo left and then I'll either install my adjustable plug or start reloading some I guess!

Yup; any kind of specialty ammo such as for Garland actions calls for homebuilt, for price and availability. Otherwise you are at the mercy of higher costs on decreasing amounts of suitable ammunition, when you can find it.

Has there ever been such a beast as a Garand chambered in 8mm Mauser?

Maybe a one off by someone, but otherwise no military force I have ever heard of has tried it. Simply no reason to, anyone adopting the M1 Garand post-WWII could get tons of cheap/free surplus .30-06 from the States as military aid, and since the ammo was already cheap and common there would be no need to modify the Garand for 8mm.

Technically it is feasible, the bolt would require no modification, and neither would the magazine (a little shorter than .30-06 but not that much shorter, might possibly require a spacer block but odds are you could get away with not having one). You would need a new barrel manufactured for 8mm though, and having the gas system modified for 8mm as well.

At the Woodstock Gun Show on Sunday, August 13th, there was a quantity of 30-06 ammo, some in en-bloc clips. Also, a couple of people had lots of clips. As mentioned, DOLLARS is the operative word.

The best route for Garands in the absence of MILSPEC ammo is to reload. IMR4895, H4895, IMR4064 and some 150gr FMJ or 168gr match bullets and its golden.
