I've been reading up on the M1 Carbine and the M2's

Just wondering if anyone has any actual experience with the M2 (or M1 Converted) Select-Fire Carbines or the M2 Conversion kits - Yes I know they're Prohib'd.

All M1/M2/M3 carbines have the same weakness, the magazines. When the mags are good, they're very reliable. I fired one at a range in the US with good mags and it was a great little gun, a bit more recoil than you might expect, but if I lived in the US, I'd probably buy one - and a Camdex to reload for it. As previously noted, if a person were to possess such an item in Canada, babies would die, the sky would fall, cats and dogs would fornicate with each other, and four ugly guys on horses would ride down the main drag in Ottawa, waving confederate flags, and being rude to people for no reason.

I have one. It is somewhat more powerful than, say, the PPSH41. Recoil and climb is not so good. But it is a reliable gun. Much lighter than the Thompson. About half the weight and more powerful.

I know a guy who has actual experience. He tells a story about having taken one out hunting. He saw a hare, he said, rolled down his vehicle window, extended the carbine and rested the carbine on the door, carefully aimed at the hare, and fired (on full-auto). Glass* shattered, he said, and then the hare hopped away (uninjured).

As the late, great, gun writer Jeff Cooper one said: "If anybody ever shoots at me, I sure hope that they do it on full-auto."

* Maybe it was the door's mirror, or maybe it was the window glass (I'm not sure now).

Plainfield Machine made a run of M2 Carbines for the Saigon Police in the 1970's
They made an over run for the American and Canadian market
Maranda in Quebec sold them in Canada
Well built by Plainfield and run like a clock
