M24 vs. M40

M40 just looks ###y. Same parts on both minus barrel and stock. Either would shoot more than acceptabley. Both proven rigs! As a side note, UNERTL is said to be selling the odd civilian version of the USMC 10x scope, $2500US. If one was so inclined you could have a very nice reproduction made. I hear V-Bull is bringing in the odd Texas Brigade Armoury rifle, one could start there, just add money!

I have always like the lines of the M40, never had the chance to shoot either.

You know, the only reasonable thing for a guy to do would be to own both! Now you got me thinking, there is still space in the gun cabinet!

Very true! Oh well, I guess I'll just build both...:D. I'm thinking the M24 first though, so then I don't have to spend the extra $$$ on a McMillan stock. Are the stocks the same on the Remington 700P and M24? Oh and I'll probably shoot out the 26" barrel before replacing it.

Big difference is that the M24 SWS is based on a Rem. long action, and the M40 series is based on the Rem short action. They also use different stocks.

With a long action chambered for short action cartridges, the bolt travel/throw is longer, and you will get sporadic feeding problems using the long action. This issue has been well documented.

The long action was used so the M24 SWS could be switched over to shoot the .300 WinMag cartridge.Very few rifles were switched over, and the move to the .338 Lapua Magnum has made the .300 WinMag swap obsolete.

You can get an Unertl USMC scope from U.S. optics, but unless you are set on building a correct M40 series clone, there are much better scopes available for the $2500.00 U.S. Unertl price tag.I have seen, handled and looked through the Unertl USMC scope, and it is a cool piece of kit, but I prefer my S&B PM-II for the features and price.;)

IMHO, go the M40 series route and forget the M24........;)

They are both H-S Precision stocks, but the M24 SWS stock has adjustable length of pull.

Oh ok, thanks for the replies. But other than that, the stocks are the same?

I don't even know if I'll end up building a real M24 or M40, I think it will just be M24 "like" (I'm looking at getting a Hart or Krieger barrel and a bunch of other mods that aren't on the real M24).

Unfortunatly US Optics is sold out of MST-100 scopes and have no plans on doing anymore runs in the near future.

Unertl is apprently still in business, they have new ownership, a great web-site lots of cool guns and the scope on the site, but no real answers when it comes to availability.

On the M40-M24, I personaly would take an M40A1 hands downs, no questions asked, the true ultimate classic sniper rifle.

True. I'm not sure why I like the M24 so much, I'll probably grow out of it soon. I think it might just be the stock and the fact that it's army and not marines.
I'm not going to pay $2500 for a Unertl scope unless I'm actually building an M40.

Rohann,

Nothing wrong with the M24, it has served the US Army very well for quite a long time and if that is what you like, then that is what you like. Like me, I love the M40A1, it is bar none my favorite rifle and I have shot quite a few copies and even a real one, both with Unertls and others scopes, but I would still like to have it with a Unertl, that scope is just out of this world.

Now on the Unertl itself, if, and a big if, you could find one, you will pay much more then $2500.00 for it. The last one I saw was about 10 months ago on e-bay and it went for over $5000.00US.

Ouch! That's quite a bit...
Well I don't know what it is about the M24. I like the stock and the barrel, but I like the M40 a lot too. Maybe it's an Army vs. Marine thing.

If you're more open to different concepts, give an AICS a test drive as well before making your decision, very much a love it or hate it kinda deal, and I love them. :) That said, McM's modern offerings rock too and are probably among the most comfortable stocks I've shouldered, and also check out (I believe this name is right) Robertson Composites, a Canadian company. They make some great LR stocks, and no import/export BS.

A Remington is a Remington, is a Remington. Not matter how you dress it up and regardless of the glass on top, it is still a Remington. Of course this is not a bad thing, a finely tuned Remington will shoot just as well as the latest and greatest new sniper rifles out there.

This package comes with a girl..

Ardent: I've thought about the AICS but it's a bloody expensive system (and apparently not very comfortable), and the Remington 700 I'm most likely buying from **** at *** is already properly bedded as well, and I quite like the HS stock. I might, down the road, buy a McMillan or Robertson stock, or maybe even the AICS, but not for now.

maynard: Many of the great new sniper rifles are based on Remingtons, aren't they? But I do get your point.

Airborne: I guess that's what I'll have to do! Just buy both:D.

Out of the two, the M40 is dead ###y!

I have been giving some very serious thought to parting ways with my tweaked up HS Precision Pro2000 HTR, (I really hate to say that as it has had some tender loving mods since its birth from HS and is as its sits SCARY accurate, Rick performing all upgrades), and having a custom reproduction of an M40 built to replace it.

Have handled both M24 and M40 and the M40 is just SOOOOOOO nice! Not that anything is wrong with the M24, just personal pref.

Any takers on a SWEET HS rifle?

Just something about that USMC camo look.
