I just gave PeterMcB his own private clinic in my basement workshop last week. Here are the observations form his 2013 22" rifle. Damn, I should get one of these, but I love my 2011 Shorty too much...
Finish:
Nice and dark grey all over, parkerizing is great. Heel area is smooth, I was suprised.
Barrel INdexing:
Very nicely done and no work needed.
Rear sights:
They fzcking work. No need to replace them at all... Whoa, that surprised the poop out of me. Orenose was here also and together we all cranked on that rear sight 5 MOA one way and then 5 MOA back, everything worked perfectly. This is gonna be one fun range blaster. If I was gonna do some casual competition, I would still replace the rear sights with M1Garand knobs from Brownells, Springfield ARmory, or that Italian/Greek dude on Ebay.
Loose Op rod guide:
PeterMcB did all the work by knocking out the pin and then dimpling the barrel and then doing the re-install of the op rod guide. I can do this job in 120 seconds, PetermcB did this in about 10 minutes without smashing any of his digits. Darn....
Front sight:
Darn, why can't that high school shop class get it right? This front sight was tall mother and I just swapped it out with a USGI standard front sight for a 22" barrel. I wanted the tall front sight for my spare parts since the tallest ones are impossible to find when a customer with a shorty needs a taller one.
Gas Cylinder Lock:
Here's the lottery ticket happiness feature. The gas cylinder timed to 5 o'clock upon re-assembly. I told ptermcb to buy a lottery ticket because se did not need any shims to get that gas cylinder lock to time properly in order to obtain a super tight gas cylinder assembly (no rattling front band). Go and feel your front band. Give it a tug and listen to any potential rattling sounds like my TRW M14 rifles from 1986 era.
The Verdict?
Don't buy one! Buy two of them.... Sorry, you know I could not resist.
Cheers and keep helping the noobs out there....
