M305 Ammo question

read bitterman's post - no2 - it's fine provided you keep below 180 grain- the rest of us have just been adding our personal experiences

ok......let me ask you in another way....
my M305 is stamped .308 ....
is it possible to use 7.62NATO ammo in this rifle????
I know that military head space is longer than hunting,
but is the length of the cartrige of the NATO and .308 same??????????
plzzz answer, do not kick me by preveous kind of answer

The headspace becomes an issue when reloading. You need to avoid overworking the area that expands near the base of the cartridge by constantly resizing it and then having it expand when you shoot again. This weakens that area and shortens the case life.

This being the internet, I can count on someone eagerly correcting me if I worded that wrong. ;)

The headspace is taken from a predetermined area from the taper (a perticular diameter in that tapered area) to the base. This measurement is what is different from the 7.62 NATO and .308 Win. cartridges.
Overall lenght of the case is not the issue to determine headspace since the cartridge rest on that taper in the chamber and the base will rest on the bolt face.
The difference in that measurement determines if you have a crush situation or excessive headspace.
So unless you have the proper instruments to measure this, it can't be easily seen by the naked eye.
This is not a big issue if you don't reload, unless you have some very, very large headspace in that chamber.

pilgrim - I've put at least a hundred rounds of federal .308 loads through mine with good results. It's perfectly safe to use .308 in these rifles. Now that I've seen some talk about federal using soft primers that can have problems when the bolt closes, I'm going to try some Winchester loads next.

I started with heavier loads such as 165 grains, but I'm using 150's these days. I figure the deer really won't know the difference as the energy put into the target is almost identical due to slightly higher velocity, and the trajectory is a little flatter on the smaller projectiles.

It's also perfectly safe to use the milsurp as you've discovered, and is highly recommended for getting lots of practice. They are the same rifle, they just changed what they stamped on it whenever they got bored.

It sounds like you lucked into a nice rifle with those groups you are getting, congratulations on that! 8)

As I've heard, the Norinco's are stamped .308 but are really chamered in 7.62. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, the new Norinco is stamped .308"
Yes, the new Norinco is chambered in 7.62 mm
Yes, the new Norinco will fire the .308"
Yes, the new Norinco will fire the 7.62 mm

I changed out the barrel and bolt on mine and it is closer to .308" than 7.62 mm but you know what? It fires the 7.62 mm just fine. Lock up is perfect every time, even on the first round out of the magazine.

If you fire the .308" in your bone stock M305 and reload the cases, you should be aware that full length resizing will put the length from shoulder to base back to .308" and when you fire that round again, it will stretch to 7.62 mm. You can only do that so many times before the case fails. If you reload, always inspect the cases for incipient case separation.

One last thing, I doubt that you will find a stock M305 that will produce a crush fit in the chamber so you do not need to worry about excessive pressure. A lot of people have found that the headspace is not much above the .308" SAAMI specs. on the new M305 rifles and will shoot the .308" without a problem.

These opinions of mine are from reading the posts since I got here and through my own personal experience. Your mileage may vary but not by much. If you do experience a problem, it is more of a fluke than what is the norm.

most sources advise that you only use the case 4x anyway before trashing it- that 3x for those who use once fired- and that goes for the garands, springfields, m14s, and should probably go for the norcs as well- almost makes it not worthwhile if you can get a good deal on ammo esp surplus-unless you WANT to make custom ammo or use a better bullet or different style than what the factory provides-
