I'm new to reloading for semi-auto's and I am currently in the process of reloading my first batch of once-fired brass (all by me-factory loaded Remington ammo and loose brass, also Remington). I'm finding that the brass is really beat up looking. I know the M14 type action is particularly hard on brass but it seems like every second piece has a dent that makes me wonder if It should be reused. Do most people get this? Most noticeable are the consistent ones, one about 1cm up from the base of the case and one about 5mm down from the shoulder. Am I being paranoid or do I maybe have some sort of extraction issue? Just for more background I'm FL sizing, small base.

I get similar dents from my m305. The dents do come out after full-length sizing, right?
I'm no expert, but it seems to me that a dent caused by smacking the receiver on the way out of the rifle is much less of a stress on the case than the pressure on the case head during firing.
Maybe check the battle rifle forum - I think I read a bunch of stuff about dented cases being a common occurrence over there.
Those dented cases are no good. You must send them to me immediately for proper disposal.

The 50,000 some odd psi that occurs during firing will just expand the case to fit the chamber and it will be as if there was never a dent in the first place.

Hey, hey, not so fast, you brass thief. OP, I will take them for disposal and I will pay the shipping.
My Garand does the same thing to brass, beats it to death with dents and smashed up case mouths. I just use a screwdriver to straighten out the case mouth damage enough to get it into a sizing die and ignore the rest. Do carefully examine the brass after every firing, I find I get maybe 5-6 loads out of my 30-06 brass before it starts showing signs of splitting, cracks near the base and so on. These semi-auto rifles are hard on brass and that is just a fact of life, but you can still get decent use out of your brass with some care.

I am always amazed by threads like this. My Norinco M14 is gentler on brass than any other self-loading rifle I own. Apparently, I am an exception.
Not so fast, I'm with you on this one! On Monday I fired about 30 rounds each of Federal, Remington, Winchester and Lake City brass in my M-14S all with 41.5gr of IMR 4985 under 168hr Hornady HPBTs, and nary a dented case, including leaving the case mouth in pristine shape. Wish my Garand was that nice!

My svt 40 does that exact same pattern around the outside of the case... ( And a good ding in the side ).

Yeah, a few of my M305 cases are dented in pretty good at the mouth also. Either way, I'm going to load these and hopefully get a few hundred rounds in this week...last chance this summer probably, BMQ in a week then off to Borden! Buh-bye M14
