I bought a Norinco M305 recently (sold my other ones a few years ago). Ordered a Boyds stock for it and the butt plate is narrower than the stock. There was definitely an issue as it was not consistent. Talked to Boyds and they sent me a new stock. The second stock just showed up and it doesn't fit either. The stock is wider than the butt plate. A good 1/8" on each side. Are there 2 different sizes of butt plates? Do they keep sending me defective stuff? What am i missing here?

that is normal.

Boyd's stocks are NOT a drop-in install. they require fitting. Including the buttplate.

The correct fix is to thin the buttstock with a spokeshave or good quality plane that is sharp enough to cut hardwood without checking it, then re-scrape it smooth and finish in oil. If that is too daunting, then buy a GI stock - those are drop-in.

My last boyds stock was a drop in. This is supposed to be a prefinished stock. Having to do that much shaping is not "fitting"

I'm impressed they sent you a second stock, even though there's nothing wrong with the first. That's pretty exceptional customer service.

I've never had a boyd's drop in, and I've fitted dozens of them. Particularly with Norinco receivers - they all need some degree of fitting.

maybe you got lucky.

Third World Problems with a stock during the Recession, Oil and Market Crash, Layoffs and Corona Virus!

Be grateful you didn't get the Skinny Ethiopian Stock where the butt plate is 1.0 inches wider than the stock!

Be that as it may, that is what Boyds sells. I wish they didn't, but they do. It's not a defect. I've bought 4 and they were all the same.
Lots of guys don't bother fitting the stock to the butt plate and leave the wood "proud".
I used a file and progressive grades of sandpaper to shape the end of three of my stocks to fit the butt plate. Finished in Tung oil with dryers. Looks great and proud of the work I did.

At the very least, if you're fitting a Boyds stock (or any proper M14 stock) to an M305, be sure to shave off the extra material off the stock that's under the right side of the receiver just below the take down notch to ensure that the receiver sits flush with the stock on the right side.

And of course, perform your function test to make sure the trigger still works properly in the new stock (it likely may not)

boyd's stocks are a drop in fit for the M1A ….. they are NEVER a drop in fit for a norinco. Alterations must be made and if they are not, the rifle is not sitting in the stock correctly.
As for the buttstock, I believe Boyds made them proud so people could use the M1A rubber buttpads versus the metal buttplate.

I just left mine thick and fitted the buttplate,
Anyone receiver the glass bedding stocks? The one's with the pre cut spaces that you fill with glass.
They sent me those a few year's ago for some reason, nice idea
I got two Danish M1 Garands that have glass bedded stocks to copy from, some day
