M305-Convince Me

If you're a precision rig shooter you won't be happy with the M14 until you've put a pile of money into it. I'd stick with a bolt action if you want a precise rifle. The M14 is accurate, but it's not precise. That said, it's still fun to shoot.

M14s / 305 or precision rifle

Much depends on whether or not you like military surplus or militry style rifles. There is something quite hard to explain about holding and shooting an Enfield or Garand that is ( well, sort of ) replicated in the Norinco version of the M14 and that certain something is, quite simply, missing from the experience associated with using hunting rifles or precision rigs. So, if you are the kind of person who is nostalgic for militaria or you simply wish to have a relatively inexpensive centerfire semi the Norc M14 may well be for you. If, on the other hand, you only enjoy MOA target work with a scoped rifle then you probably wont get the same sense of enjoyment out of the M14 as many others do.

I looked into it as well. It wasn't for me.

Some people really like it, the same way some people are really into modding 10/22 Rugers, AR rifles etc.

The reasons I looked into it:
1) $400 entry price
2) Semi auto .308
3) Non-restricted
4) History
5) Looks cool
6) When redone some of the aftermarket wood stocks can look pretty impressive.

The reasons I didn't go into it:
1) Crude look/feel to the rifle
2) Mediocre accuracy compared even to a target AR semi auto .308.
3) In order to make it accurate you need to do a lot of modding
4) It's a money pit.

Ultimately to get the rifle I would want, I would have to sink way to much money into it, and then still want more. It's not a plinker and it's not a target grade bolt action either. It fits in the middle. I'm just not there yet.
Maybe some day.

I'm a precision shooter by trade. I love nothing more than to hear my heart pounding while sitting behind the glass of a nice long range rig... waiting for that right moment to squeeze the trigger. I love it !

But...

I'm intrigued with the hype and dedication that some M305 shooters in this forum display. Simply, I'm on the fence.

Tell me, why should I invest in a M305 instead of a new precision .308? I'm a poor Saskatchewan boy and can only afford one or the other.

PS... Right now I do not have any rifle in .308.

It is one of those things.... if you had to ask .... you don't need one.:yingyang::D:D:D

Most in the know have said it quite well..................

if you are looking at the M14/M305 as a precision type set up, then be prepared to spend LOTS of time AND money building one up.Money better spent on a bolt gun, or maybe one of the newer .308 Semi-Auto precision guns such as the Knights SR25 (but they are restricted here and big bucks as well).

If you want a non-restricted semi-auto battle rifle to take out in the wood to have fun, then it is the best buy around. With a little tinkering/tuning, it can be made to be quite accurate, reliable, and consistent. But you have to like to tinker with it.

I have had built or built myself several high dollar ($5000.00+) "precision" M14s and end up selling them off and going back to my custom bolt gun everytime.

SKBY.

to add to this
as you are all aware, I am one m14 luvvin nutjob :D :D :dancingbanana:
I can't own a gun I can't tune, tweak, cutomize and accurize my self..... I am the epitomy of the word "gunnut". This one reason why the m14 platform.... especially the cheap rinco's , have become my favorite rifle to play with.

Reason 2 for me being an M14 luvvin nutjob ? Born at the tail end of the 60's, at the height of the vietnam war, my birth coinciding with batles such as hamburger hill :D , grew up on classic war films and in my teen years all the GREAT "nam" era war movies were comin out..... full of troops carrying m16's and the dreaded snipers with thier sniper rigged m14's facing of against Ak toting charlie and the RPK toting charlie snipers.

my two favorite wartime rifles are the RPK zastava type sniper rifle and the good ol M14. Can't own a Zastava sniper or an authentic chinese equivalent but I can own as many rinco m14 rifles as I can carry hehehehe.......
so for this reason, I justify my never ending M14 nuttjobishness

I also own a VERY accurate model 70 pre64 action boss equiped 7mm mag bolt gun that will shoot the balls off a squrrel at 100 yards and then some hehehehe
