M305 failure to fire

So I have a new Norinco M305 shorty that I bought from Canada Ammo. On my first outting it would not fire.

The rifle was cleaned and lubed as per the manual before hand. It chambers the round just fine. The firing pin protrudes what appears to be an appropriate amount but I don't have a gauge to measure it or my calipers to hand either. I do however have a US army maintance manual TM9 which tells me it should stick out min 0.044" max 0.06".

I was using surplus ammo bought from a local dealer not a board sponsor so I won't mention names. It all dates from 1988 and appears externally to be in good shape as does the box it came in. This is my prime suspect.

I tried three seperate times to fire three different rounds all to no avail. The primer was definetly struck however it appeared to be a shallow strike. I don't have a picture or one of the struck rounds to hand.

My plan is to try some new commercial ammo to rule out the ammo.

If this doesn't work what else should I check?

take the bolt out of the rifle

shake it in your hand without touching any part of the firing pin

that firing pin should rattle.

did you put oil or any lubricant in the bolt?

is there any packing foam or other foreign material in the trigger group in front of the hammer? ( I have seen this before, small bit of the white foam from the box they come in)

a primer dent is normal as this is a free floating firing pin..... but something must be A) preventing the firing pin from fully striking the primer
or B) something at the safety bridge impeding the firing pin or
C) something preventing the hammer from fully striking the firing pin.

ALSO.... visually verify that your bolt IS closing all the way.
