So I decided on a muzzle brake for my Norc M305 from Blackrose Tactical in Maple Ridge, BC. I emailed Roger as I didn't like the brake that they specifically made for the M305 and asked if he could machine one of their 3-port heavy brakes to fit the Norc M305. Roger was more than happy to accomidate my request and actually went into the shop today to start on it! This is the one I'm getting and I think a steal at $94 shipped!

IMPORTANT: THIS METHOD DESTROYS THE FLASH HIDER!

So, now I needed to remove the stock flash hider off my M305 and of course it was a spot welded one! I watched videos on the "Bubba" method and the one where the guy uses a custom 'gear' puller to remove it in a much more safer manner than the Bubba method. Having neither a barrel vise or a pulling tool and since I didn't really care about preserving the flash hider, I opted for my own method where I would use a Dremel with a cut off wheel to carefully cut around the welded area and separate/remove the flash hider from the welded section.

I first made my own castle nut removal tool out of a flat blade screwdriver bit. Worked like a charm to loosen the nut.

Then using a Dremel with a cutting wheel, I very CAREFULLY cut out a rectangular section that contained the two spot welds. Once separated from the welded portion, the flash hider slid off very easily.

I then went back with a combination of small chisel and cutting wheel and removed the 'chunks' of spot weld and metal.

I further cleaned it up with light sanding/polishing with emery cloth and a brass wire wheel. I really took my time with this step.

Finally I re-blued with with some Birchwood Casey Cold Bluing.

All ready now for a 3 Port Heavy Duty Tactical Muzzle Brake from Blackrose Tactical that Roger is tooling up for me in M305 threads as we speak!

How will the new one be held on? I'm not keen on the original either but we don't have any rear support or backing to stop a crush washer. Are you reusing the castle nut?

New brake just threads on I believe. No castle nut required. Could be a set screw (I drilled and tapped my own on my brake for my SKS). I'll let you know when I put it on. Not really worried about it as it has a thread and there are plenty of brakes and flash hiders out there for the M305/M14 that don't require any reuse of the original castle nut - just the threads.
