I finally got my Boyds stock and all seems well except I am pondering how others have swapped over the metal from the old chu-wood stock, specifically the front sling mount. I know to drill the rivets but how did you re-attach the mount?

At the M14 forum there was a guy on there using 10-32 button screws and T type nuts that he epoxied in place. The T nuts are like a rivnuts, with little teeth or serrations. I'll see if I can find a link to a picture. I'm going to do this myself as I need to remove the swivel to repaint the stock properly and I'm going to move it down one hole to install a qd swivel stud for a bipod.

See if this works. Sorry for the plagiarism.

Oh ####, I'm too stupid to know how to post a picture or link. T nuts with prongs for wood and hex head button screws.

Thats not a bad idea, should be able to pick up that at the bolt warehouse.

Working on guns is so much more challenging that heavy equipment, at least off highway equipment takes all the same tools. Every time I start a gun project I find myself in the garage making jigs and tooling more than doing the work on the gun!

My latest Frankenstein from my collection of extra tools, damn stock retainer bolts are hard to remove!

I re-used the factory rivets.

Hey Rob,

My boyds stock was thinner than the chu wood in the forend section where the front sling mount installs. I drilled the factory rivets just enough to remove them, they had enough shank left to re-upset them into the new stock. I know it sounds hokey, but it is a very solid installation. Give me a call and you can check it out.

Or you can attach a Harris Bipod and use the sling swivel on that. That way even if you don't use the bipod you can still clip the swivel to the mounting stud.

Thanks Gavin, I finally got around to installing the front sling mount now that the Marstar rifle has arrived. You were right on the money, the Chu-wood is way thicker, I ground off the rivets and removed then, more than enough meat on them for the Boyds stock. I had to grind the washers down from 0.7" to 0.49" to fit the Boyds recesses as well. It turned out great and is very solid as you stated.
