Is it possible to fit a M305 gas assembly on a medium weight NM barrel? I understand that a gas cylinder lock with standard threads would have to be used to match the barrel threads but would the splines on the gas cylinder fit the barrel, etc.?

The Norinco gas assembly appears to be of excellent quality and are plentiful so if they could be used it would make the conversion much easier and cheaper requiring only a USGI gas cylinder lock and castle nut.

Thanks for your thoughts.

To answer your Question Yes you have to use the Gas cylinder lock for that Barrel as the splines are the same Dimension but the threads in the Lock are Metric not standard like the English/American thread pitch found on the USGI stuff, The Castle nut is close enough to work on the NM barrel

The inside diameter of the Norinco gas cylinder is also different then the USGI gas cylinder.IIRC, the Chinese gas cylinders are slightly larger internally.Plus the Chinese gas sytem is Chro-Moly, were as the USGI gas cylinders are stainless steel. This is important to know when unitising the assembly.

SKBY.

If I could get a USGI system for a reasonable price I would. Having said that, the Chinese systems have worked very well and they are a good fit for the Chinese piston that they put in them. If the parts required to complete a changeover to a NM barrel could be reduced to a NM barrel, gas cylinder lock, and castle nut it would make it much easier.

I am completely impressed with my current M305 with a few minor changes (USGI bolt, fiberglass stock, sights, and Rooster33 guide) and I doubt many original standard M14 rifles could be any better but I have an itch to try another with a NM barrel and optics.

I thought that someone posted of trying this quite some time ago (a year maybe) but a search came up empty.
