Has anyone bought any of those new norinco m305 guns in 7.62x39 and tried accurizing them? Do they need it out of the box like most of the standard m305s do? Tempted to get one and slick it up. Yes I know the 7.62x39 round isn't inherently accurate, just looking to make the gun run smoother. After doing some reading I see you can't really swap stocks because of the AK mag liner, but will the handguards, sights etc work? Interested to hear others experiences now that these have been out for awhile. Thanks.

EDIT: I'm not interested in others opinions of "just buy a vz 58 instead of wasting your money" etc. I've got two already. Just looking at trying something new.

I built a bolt gun off of a Savage Axis in 7.62 x 39mm, 5 shots same hole with my hand loads at 100m and 1.5 min groups with Chinese ball. Nothing wrong with the cartridge.
To change stocks, you need to move the liner as well, other than that, as mentioned, do the same stuff you would to any other M-14 type action to accurize one. I also shortened the magazines, cause they just look stupid sticking out of the rifle.

X39 isn't inherently inaccurate, just some rifle platforms it's used in are (SKS,AK) 6mm PPC is based off it. I would buy one, shoot it and see how it groups. Then try some of the typical M-305 tweaks on it and see how it responds. They could end up being really good shooters if they do respond well to some tweaking. I should look into one myself one day.

Splitting hairs: 6PPC is based off of 220 Russian, which owes its lineage to 7.62x39.

If you do start tweeking the M-305 for accuracy gains I think you’d need to start with a baseline of excellent quality ammo. In x39 I can only really see that coming from hand loads.

my m305a is stock other then a m14.ca scope mount and a muzzle break! once I play a bit like this then I might try other things as well but as it sits I like it, I do use the 5 round short mags though makes it a bit easier to toss around when you wanna look tacticool can use the stock 30 rounds size mags lol

As others have said, there's nothing wrong with the cartridge. Use good quality commercial 7.62X39 as opposed to 50 year old surplus, and you're off to a good start. Handload for your rifle, and I see no reason that an M305 in X39 can't be just as accurate as one chambered in 7.62X51 - or at least until you get out to ranges where the COAL, bullet BC, and muzzle velocity start causing the X39 to start getting pushed around by the wind (or transition below the speed of sound). I've shared the range with a guy running .300 BLK (very similar external ballistics to X39), where I was running a .308 bolt gun. We both had an easy time ringing gongs out to 400 yards. From 400 to 600, he started to struggle, whereas I still found it easy. We didn't try anything past that point.

If you want to handload X39 and accurize your M305A, that honestly sounds like a great project. I you haven't already taken one of TacticalTeacher's M14 clinis, I highly recommend it - I took one 5 years ago. I enjoyed myself immensely, and learned a TON.

It's funny, until thread I've subconsciously written the 7.62x39 round off as inaccurate, solely because of the SKS.
I sense a 7.62x39 project this winter...

You can with a little work

I recall reading years ago of someone pulling the bullets from surplus 7.62x39, measuring the powder for consistency, reinserting and reloading the cartridge. Apparently there was about half a grain of difference in powder weight before making that change, and he probably got more consistent OAL after reinserting the bullets. I suspect that the powder difference might not be as high in some surplus (the Czech ammo can shoot remarkably well), but it's another indicator of potential of the cartridge versus many casual observations that aren't as positive.
