So my Norinco M305 has this little glitch where the last round in the magazine pops loose and the bolt catches open. Didn't do it until after a few hundred rounds went through it. Super annoying have a bolt-to-the-rear-stoppage with a round sitting loose on top of the mag follower.

Any suggestions? Seems like a weird quirk that I haven't read about before.

Agreed.

Don't do anything till you can rule out mag. If you have others, or someone you know have reliable magazines, try these first. I've seen newer mags of my own needing gentle massaging to make them run reliable , and I had an issue similar to yours with the brand new import mag not sure if it's Nork or KCI. Not sure how old your magazines are ( year of rifle), but any firearm, in particular auto loading, the magazine is the Achilles heel 99% of the time.

I shaped the follower and the mag lips gently to match the geometry of a 100% reliable magazine. The new ones work correctly now.

I had the same problem with some mags that I got. I ended up bending the feed lips in a little bit. Take the suspect mag, load one round into it and smack (not overly hard) the bottom of the mag against a table. With my problem mags the round would pop right out, on my good mags it wouldn't.

No problems with either Norinco or SA mags here.
I bought a KCI mag and it was crap.
Last round popping out, needed 2 men and a boy to insert the mag.
I found a drawing online and measured the mag and it was out of spec.
I returned the mag and I was given a Norinco mag instead and it was perfect.

You mean the last round and only the last round, doesn't feed? It happening with two mags indicates it's not a mag issue. Usually is, but look at the bolt hold open. It or its spring may be too long.
You may want to download the M-14 manuals from biggerhammer.com too. Free .pdf's. Note the need for the provided UN & PW.
