M305 length questions

I shoot a 22" and my buddy shoots a shorty. Accuracy is too close to call - no detectable difference. I understand that the shorty loses about 200 fps of muzzle velocity which may be a factor at ranges beyond 600. I've never shot that far so don't have first-hand experience.

From a reliability perspective, neither platform has had any problems to date. One of my friend's shorties was having some failures to feed but that seems to be that particular rifle rather than shorties in general. I think I'm going to buy a shorty to accompany my 22". If you're not going to be a long range shooter I'd go with the 18.5" - looks great and handles better than the longer barrel.

Thanks for the info Pr589. I'm actually looking at building an AR-15 inspired M1a-type rifle, it would be cheaper than the DDM4 I'd like, that and the M1a platform isn't restricted by name, so I'm hoping to BS it into a dual-purpose rifle (range and hunting), and I don't Think I'll stretch the rifle's range too far past 600 yards.

There are a few stocks available that will let you run AR type furniture. I use a Blackfeather with Magpul stuff. I'm currently running a scope rather than a red-dot or CQB type arrangement but I'm thinking that might be the direction of my shorty purchase. I can put on a new Op Rod guide on the shorty receiver and swap it into and out-of the existing Blackfeather stock without having to change optics or re-zero. Should take 5 minutes every time I want to change from shorty to long-barrel.

Funny you mention the Blackfeather... that's what I'm looking at. With a Umbrella Corp pistol grip, CTR (or MOE), AFG2, and I'm thinking of a Leupold VX-R Hog scope with one-piece rings (SPR-style, sorry if my wording is 'off') on M14.ca's steel scope type CASM mount. Of course this is pretty much what I would of put on the DD rifle.

Good parts selection since its similar to what i have :). You should be aware that pistol grips with beaver-tails aren't suitable for the BF. Also, I gambled and went with the Alu M14.ca mount for the weight savings and haven't had any issues. The platform is pretty hefty with a scope (12 lbs and a bit) so every gram saved is a plus for me. Fast sight picture acquisition for off-hand shooting is a must or wobble develops quite rapidly.
