Are parts from an M-14 interchangeable with the M305? For example, the trigger group, barrel etc. I was reading that a fellow had an M305 for sale with a TRW bolt in it. I am assuming in that application you would have to have it headspaced. Has anyone interchanged parts between the two. I would like to hear from you if you have.
Thanks.

I have an M14S/M305 with a TRW bolt, Fulton Armory barrel, springfield gas sytem and HR-N trigger group. If you use the TRW bolt on the Chicom barrel, you usually have to lap it in because it is tight. With the Fulton Armory barrel, the TRW bolt fit right in beautifully, about .002" slop. I had to put the springfield gas system on it because the Chicom one was a sloppy fit. I didn't have to shim it, it was tight. I also ended up with the right tension on the piston to op. rod. This centered very well too. The HR-N trigger group snapped right in. I reused the Chicom flashhider which fitted on well and tightened it down with a USGI castlenut which is a different thread than the Chicom. The front sight is straight thanks to Hungry showing me how to index the barrel. I have a USGI fiberglass stock that my receiver snapped into tightly. I put the Chicom buttstock back on it. I had to get a bolt from Home Depot to replace the woodscrew. I reused the handguard and filed the sides down so they don't touch the stock. I also have a leepers scope mount that I ovalled the side screw hole and shimmed the mount contact/stripper clip guide mount so the fitting and elevation is correct. Oh, if you get one of these mounts get proper replacement bolts. The ones they come with are real crap.

Mainly the M14S/M305 is metric threaded. Dimensionally they are very close to the imperial sizes so much that you can use virtually any USGI parts that don't have threads.

I think that is it. I hope I have answered some of your questions.

Thanks, Ripstop. You have given me lots to think about. I have most of those parts but it will be a TRW barrel. Won't be getting at this until after Christmas but I will let you know how it turned out if you're interested.

Just one question left (at the moment), how does it shoot?

The only difference between the USGI M-14/S.A. M1A & the Norc M-14s is that the Norc barrels have metric threads for the gas lock & the FH Castlenut. The Chinese recievers are threaded standard so any aftermarket/USGI barrel will thread in.

Any bolt should be "Fit" to the reciever/ barrel. Some USGI bolts drop right in and headspace fine, and some take a little bit of work and have to be lapped in to fit.

All other M1A /USGI parts will interchange.

Also, some M1 Garand parts will interchange with the M14, such as the rear sights.

My M14 uses the Chinese reciever only, and features the following:

-TRW bolt
-TRW trigger
-TRW Op rod
-USGI gas assembly
-Smith Enterprises barrel
-Smith Gaslock sight
-Smith DC Flash hider
-USGI op rod spring
-Rooster33 op rod spring guide

Have a read through the M14 FAQ post I have at the top of the Forum. It is not complete yet, but you may find info there to answer some of your questions.

SKBY.
