I'm planning to get on of my M305's chopped down to an 18.5" barrel. This requires the Navy front sight. For those of you who have this sight, do you like it or do you miss the conventional style open front sights?

It uses the stock rear sight, which can be replaced by a garand rear sight if you are having trouble with the sight that came with the rifle.

I too love my navy front sight. The full circle of protection around it allows another referrence point when aligning the front sight with the rear sight, and I feel that it helps in keeping better sight alignment.

You can center the front "circle" in the rear circle, and while keeping those aligned place the top of the sight post on the desired point of aim. For those of us who haven't had major (read: military) practice with this rifle to the point that we can consistantly shoulder it in the exact same position, it's a help.

The "spot" weld that this stock is designed for makes it a bit tougher to be consistant if you are not familiar with the unit. For *me* this sight helps reduce this problem.

Don't forget you need a metric gas lock front sight to work on an M305.....a Smith glfs will not work on a norinco. One of the issues with cutting down a norinco barrel is that the diameter is less than a USGI so you can not use a traditional flash hider...hence the reason people are using a redrilled AR15 flashhider on the norincos....

I think a better choice is to use your norinco barrel until you need to replace it, then rebarrel with a USGI or commercial and use a vortex direct connect....

That looks the best with a glfs.....

Yeah, I was thinking of getting the Navy frt sight from Rooster. I wonder how delivery times are running now. Heard he's been busy.

I've had my #2 M-305 with Jeff at Valley Gunsmithing since first week of July to do the SOCOM thing. He can't proceed until he gets the parts.

Guess who and what he's waiting on?

Looks like a business opportunity for some other enterprising parts maker.

I'm not sure whether you are saying that a Vortex can't be done for the Norc shorty.

But I had my guy re-thread the end and it takes a Vortex just fine.

The thread area on the norc barrel is about 5 tho under the USGI barrel I have done several conversions and have yet to encounter problems
Sharkson the problem is that Jeff ordered a large quaintity of parts and Rooster 33 had nothing in stock so hence your wait takes time to make the parts

Jeff the reason is that most people are using the AR15 muzzle brakes is that they are #1 cheap ,#2 easy to thread the barrel
The diameter is nearly identical say except 5 thou outside dia the reason you cannot use the original Muzzle Brake is that it is located on the barrel with 3 key ways and the cut down dia allows very little contact with the splines that run parallel alright for the muzzle brake castle nut

Anyone know of a manufacturer of metric gaslocks with dovetail sight mounts (ala Smith enterprises)? I've been using a navy sight on my 18.5 Norc but would like the ability to use the XS tritium.

Also my rooster Navy sight keeps losing the front sight pin, locktite notwithstanding.
cheers

I hope somebody designs one as I'd love to install the tritium sight too. So far I've been unable to find one. I asked on some M14 specific boards last year with no luck as well.

Regarding the front pin falling out I wonder if the rooster navy sight is the same design as the batch slavex had made a couple of years ago. I've never had a problem with mine, nor heard of others.

Easy remedy buy a new us barrel with the correct thread pitch:p

Three gunsmiths I have dealt with including two I know personally, have advised that although they can cut and thread the norinco barrel for a vortex direct connect...as the barrel is shallower than a USGI and the threads can allow it to use the vortex....there is not enough material for a proper connection. It will attach but not enough to be threaded to be proper and have sufficent contact. I guess others might have received different advice but I have only shorted a USGI barrel vice the norincos. When I rebarrel the norincos in the distant future, I will think about shorting them.

Reference the Rooster33 metric GLFS....what is it worth?
