Hey guys, took my M14 out tonight for the first time since I did some upgrades... Not a success at all. It will shoot one round fine, will eject the empty casing but will not chamber the next round in the magazine. You have to manually cycle the bolt to chamber the next round. The gun shot fine and cycled fine when I first bought it. Since then I've installed an M14doc cqb stock, a vltor casv14 handguard and an eotech sight. Also have installed a new op rod spring guide, also have shimmed the gas nut.

My question I guess is where did I go wrong? Is it possible I've shimmed the gas system to tight? Lock ring gets snug at the 3 o'clock position and then gets tight at the 6 o'clock position. The gas shutoff screw is slotted in the vertical position and I believe this is the on position...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot!

Take off the stock #### the rifle and engage the bolt holding device (or just hold the action to the rear) .
Tilt the stock upwards and see if the piston drops slowly towards the receiver (Tilt test).
Did you ensure the piston was installed correctly and moving back and forth before screwing on the gas plug ?
When you reassembled it did you do the trigger test after assembly ?

Just read your post again...You shimmed the gas nut ?? The shims are supposed to go between the front ferrule and the ridge on the barrel , the flash eliminator has to be removed or cut the shims at an angle and slip them over the barrel.

Holding the action open the piston does slowly drop... And yes sorry about the wording I did place shims between the ferrule and the gas cylinder lock, when I got the rifle the lock ring was to loose, woulnd get snug till the 6 o'clock position. Piston is installed correctly and moves back and forth.

What is the trigger test

Thanks for the help!

1. #### the action and engage the safety....try to fire the rifle.
2. Take the safety off and fire the action and keep the trigger to the rear.
3. Keeping the trigger squeezed #### the action and see if the hammer goes forward with the bolt.
4. Release the trigger and you should hear a click..then fire the action.
Do this a few times to ensure the hammer doesnt follow the bolt forward , this is important as you dont want to get slam fires .( out of battery firing )

This test HAS TO BE DONE after changing stocks

Also forgot to mention I tried 2 different types of ammo tonight... Prvi and Hornady, neither would chamber the next round after firing but both would eject the empty casings fine

Bingo! Think that's what the problem was, I think I had it shimmed to tight which wasn't letting the gas ports line up. Thanks for the quick responses and help guys! Will post back with some results after I test it again!

If the gas ports weren't lined up how was it getting enough power to cycle far enough to eject the case? I don't think that was your problem.

What you haven't told us is how the gun is ending up after firing. Is the hammer cocked, the bolt forward or rearward? If the bolt goes far enough back to eject the old round, it is within millimeters of picking up a new round, seems odd that it would short stroke that precisely.

After firing the empty casing would eject, bolt ended up in the closed position, hammer was cocked... I thought it might have been a feeding problem with the mag so I switched from my 20 round to my 5 with the same results. After firing you would have to manually move the bolt to charge a round and when I did this the next round in the mag chambered perfectly... Gun just would not pick up the next shell in the mag after ejecting the spent one.
